About the Author

A world famous cartoonist, called the "Poet Laureate" of the whitewater community, William Nealy became a cult figure in the world of outdoor sports with his combination of instruction and artful caricatures in his paddling and mountain biking manuals. Nealy died in 2001. As an instructor, Nealy's strength lay in his ability to convey in simple terms the often counter-intuitive techniques of adventure sports.Nealy was arguably the best-known ambassador of his sport, entertaining and instructing hundreds of thousands of paddlers through his illustrated books. The success of the first edition of Kayak as an instruction manual hinged squarely on Nealy's ability to convey himself personally to the reader. It is all too obvious that each of the mishaps that befall the illustrated characters populating each of his books happened, in reality, to Nealy himself. That self-effacement, while hilarious, also embodied empathy for the reader and for the mishaps that were sure to befall him as he bounced his or her way down the steep learning curve of the sport. I just started whitewater kayaking with a class late last autumn and began paddling outside 2 1/2 months ago. So far I've put in about 90 hours boating in that time and the concepts in this book finally feel like they're starting to sink in.The explanations are really clear. The illustrations are (of course) fantastic. And humorous, which helps keep the topics interesting, for those of us who would prefer to be actually ON the water, rather than reading about it!Sometimes it really helps to experience physical visuals, too. Nealy describes eddy fences and boils in a way that really makes them seem like 3-D features. Which they are. But until I paddled the Ottawa River, the ones I encountered were so subtle that their shape wasn't clear. While there on the Ottawa, I really *saw* and *felt* them, and had my "Aha! This is what he means!" moment.I've read the book once, and I think it's time to read it again. I imagine I'll be reading it over and over as I progress, picking up different useful things at each stage of my development.

I learned a lot from Nealy's books and maps when I first started boating. I was lucky enough to meet him. He had such an imaginative way of looking at things and making them memorable. His art puts an easily remembered view to the way things work and what actually happens when your moves don't. In the lower corner of the pages he shows a roll in progress; as you let them flip by under your thumb. Even today "if you can't spit, don't run run it" still applies, unless you enjoy being severely thrashed. Even if you are a short boat hot dog, give it a read and get an idea of what it was like in a 13' 2" boat running stuff without seeing videos, reading blogs/forums, depending on the few books available and often Nealy's maps to get even a clue what was over the next drop or round the corner. Oh yeah, no cell phones, imagine that, no help coming, on your own.

Excellent for both novice and advanced kayaker. For those who venture beyond lake or bayou kayaking, this is a nice choice for adults and children, given the illustrated approach to the subject matter. Highly recommended whether you are in a yak in Class 1 wiffles or some heavier foam and rollers going downhill in a river full of rocks. Would make a great gift for kayaking friends.

What a clever & creative writing style! William Nealy would have been a treasure to call your friend! His closest friends did us a huge favor bringing this resource to print. Thank you! Nealy's artful sketches and caricatures are spot on... simplifying what otherwise would be complicated concepts & situations to explain... Duh! "Now I get it"! Wm. Nealy's book, Kayak: The New Frontier is like a Bible for those wanting to learn how to more safely navigate moving water. KUDOS!

It is fun, informative with great illustrations. A must read for a new whitewater boater! The amount of time spent staring at a nasty hydraulic is directly proportional to the amount of time that you'll spend getting trashed in it. :D

Love the text (very humorous) and the pictures. I found the book to be very helpful as I progress in my kayaking abilities. I highly recommend this book.

I so appreciated the author's description of how the trauma of his accident and the treatment for his spinal cord injury lead to an ability to leave his body, what he calls the quiet. Yoga helped him integrate and reconnect with his body in a way that Western medicine didn't believe was possible. An important book for anyone, especially those facing paralysis.

This book is a reference guide for life. I did not expect to be so taken in, so much a part of his trauma and transcendence. A mirror to my soul. I am going to read this book twice, maybe 3 times, so I can apply the life lessons for living whole. Beautiful writing, absolutely beautiful. I have had both feet operated on twice, and contacted an infection at the surgery center. My podiatrist said if the 6 weeks of aggressive IV antibiotics don't kill the infection, there is a possibility of amputating the big toe, but I refuse to accept that possibility. I have been an athlete since age 10 and now I'm 54. Running, biking, hot yoga, karate, etc. I'm literally at a loss about what I can do and who I am. Exercise was for my mind and my body. I feel like I have a friend or a buddy in reading Matthew's healing stories and encouraged to write my own. Thank you Matthew. Thank you. Amy

I discovered this book while searching the web for information on yoga for people living with disabilities. Through a series of clicks I landed on Matthew Sanford's web site where I saw a photo of a young man leaning forward from his wheel chair, reaching over to adjust a student practicing a yoga standing pose.I learned that the author is a leader in adapting Iyengar yoga to meet the needs of the individual. Matthew's mental awareness--as a result of a spinal cord injury--was literally knocked out of the lower two-thirds of his body. While doctors were able to keep him alive, he was not given the tools to reconnect his mind to his paralyzed body.Matthew describes how for years after the devastating accident, from the chest down, he experiences a "schism" or "a form of silence" between his mind and his body. During his first months in the hospital and later periods in intensive care units there was so much pain that leaving his body became a survival skill. These experiences alone catapulted Matthew into unknown territory when it comes to understanding the mind and body.In 1991, he began studying Iyengar yoga with Jo Zukovich, co-founder of the San Diego Yoga Studio. When they started, it was not clear how yoga would travel through his paralyzed body, and there were no examples to emulate. WAKING describes how teacher and student learned and adapted together.In 1998, Matthew began to share the results of their work in an adaptive class for people with disabilities. About the same time, he began teaching people without disabilities. He found that the principles of yoga apply the same way in both cases. WAKING helps the reader to understand why the author's unique perspective is equally applicable for people who do not have his limitations. Matthew's broader aim in writing this book and in teaching yoga is to infuse the importance of mind-body integration into the rehabilitation process. To this end, he offers workshops to healthcare professionals and yoga teachers alike. He uses his story to share how yoga is indeed a "waking" of the human consciousness. This is a book that can potentially revolutionize the thinking of physical therapists and anyone that works with people who are coping with past trauma and injuries. This was an awesome book. A great story for anyone really, but very helpful as well to those in the medical or alternative health care field, as I am a massage therapist. I found the linking of trauma and injury with the body very helpful in understanding clients and even my own limitations or prior injuries, it proves that your muscles do remember and even have flashbacks to trauma incurred to the body. I was totally inspired by Matthew and all he went through and accomplished during his journey back to health and Im so grateful that he shared it with us. It is also a good book for anyone experiencing aging in their bodies to read as well, lots of helpful insight for all of us as we start to disconnect from our bodies because of limitations or injury or age. Very inspiring and uplifting and hopeful.

Matt Sanford is my hero!!! He has tremendous courage and wisdom despite being dealt some really tough blows in his young life. Somehow, he has managed through a lot of hard work to use what he's learned and share it through words that speak volumes to me about what's really important in life. I read a ton of books; this one is in my top 5 book ever. It made me cringe, wince, laugh, remember, cry, hurt, and most of all cherish my life in a deeper way than I ever knew possible.Even if you think that you don't want to read anything that would make you "hurt or wince", this is one of those books that also reminds us to appreciate our connection both to our inner selves and others.Thank you Matt. . . you're too awesome for words!

I almost feel bad writing that. I almost rated it four stars but the truth is, it couldn't have been any other way. It isn't the best book. It is the adult that the best child has become. It is resolution. The journey and exploration of Greensky is complete. While I do certainly appreciate a book that has a final end. Especially since books that end have been found to limit earnings (and this has done more to destroy good writing than almost anything else) it is important to find one that ends and better to find one that ends well. Ending well has also been destroyed by the movie industry. We don't want things to end 'sensibly'. We almost become aggravated if there is a realistic compromise. This book ends exactly that way. And that is why I love it. So there.

This is one of my top three favorite Childrens' book series. Imaginative, thoughtful, with a creative and provocative approach to issues of non-violence.

I read these books many years ago, several times over, and thought they were wonderful. Zilpha Keatley Snyder is an under-appreciated author and one of my all-time favorites! These are the fourth set I have bought over the years; I read them to my grandchildren.

The Green Sky Trilogy, and the video game that served to continue the story, were formative for me as a boy. The world is breathtaking and the story is thought-provoking.

Sweet childhood memories of playing the computer game. I purchased the whole trilogy and love having it in my bookcase.

This is the third book in the Green Sky Trilogy and readers definitely need to read the first two books, Below the Root and And All Between, in order to understand this book. I read the first book in childhood and always remembered it, although I wasn't able to find the remaining two books until the advent of Amazon.com. Even as an adult, I enjoyed finishing the trilogy, despite the style feeling a bit dated. It's a slower read than people might be used to these days, especially with books like The Hunger Games trilogy being so popular, books that are action-packed and have break-neck pacing. There's a fascinating parallel, though, between the themes in The Hunger Games and the themes in the Green Sky trilogy; both trilogies are deeply anti-war and place huge emphasis on the value of life, both ally and enemy. The Green Sky trilogy goes farther into exploring the theme, I think, by envisioning a world without conflict and how such a world could operate. With The Hunger Games resonating with so many people, young and old, now, I think Zilpha Keatley Snyder's trilogy deserves a resurgence.

The list of characters at the beginning of this book should give you a hint that the book is hard to follow. The main characters from the first two books of this series, BELOW THE ROOT and AND ALL BETWEEN, are back, along with a cast of hundreds. The two girls from different cultures, Teera and Pomma, are the focus of the Rejoyning, the integrating of the Kindar and the Erdlings into one society. The girls soon find out that it is no fun to be revered as messiah figures; in fact it puts them in danger from the splinter groups on each side who want society to remain as it was before the Rejoyning.I really wanted to love this book, like everything else that Ms. Snyder has written, but making myself finish was a grueling chore. The plot is most likely too convoluted and politically significant for children to read. It is two hundred pages of all the minutiae of council meetings and political machinations to try and integrate two societies. Instead of being written from the children's perspective like the first two books, this one is mainly told by adults and details the boring grown-up concerns, like supply distribution. None of the charm or magic of the first two books. What a yawn! Only read this if you want a detailed account of integrating two superstitious, bigoted societies.

I read Ellefson's book with great anticipation. I am a lifelong Megadeth fan and, since the mouthpiece of that band has always been Dave Mustaine (and rightfully so, I suppose), I was eager to see what Ellefson had to say. Not just about Megadeth, but about his journey to sobriety. I share many similarities to his background - we are the same age, raised in rural, close-knit families with normal, hard-working, loving parents and with formal religious training...we both got in trouble with drugs and alcohol at a young age, but also cleaned up our acts at a young age (myself in '88 and he in '90). I enjoy these stories of how my Heavy Metal Heroes keep that sobriety too.I have to say when I first read the book, I was somewhat underwhelmed. He almost made getting sober seem "too easy" and it seemed like he was often "holding back" his true feelings about Mustaine, the band's career, and his exit from and reunion with the band. SO...I decided to re-read Dave Mustaine's biography that came out in 2010, to see what was "missing" before I made my judgement. (I assume if you're a Megadeth fan, you've read it - if not, go buy it now!)Well after re-reading Mustaine's book, for sure there are 2 very different opinions of many things that happened. The most glaring example is how Mustaine claims he PAID Ellefson to go to his drug rehab meetings "and before I knew it, he was clean and sober, I accidentally 12-stepped Junior". Well, Ellefson admits to nothing of the kind! Also, Mustaine describes in great detail Ellefson's lawsuit and the bad blood between them at the time....and Ellefson barely gives that a paragraph. I got the impression he is either so "over it" he doesn't want to talk about it anymore, or, possibly the settlement forbids him to talk about it. Well, you can compare and judge for yourself.The GOOD thing is, after reading the 2 books, I can see how Ellefson was able to embrace and stick with sobriety for good much easier that Mustaine did. It goes to show that if you have a solid background in life, both family and religion, it is something to help you know right from wrong, believe in yourself and be strong---Mustaine had none of those advantages; no wonder he relapsed so many times! To Ellefson's credit, his book offers no negativity toward Mustaine or anyone else for that matter. He shares a completely positive message, and takes full responsibility for his life.Here is a man that went from a naive kid from the midwest to a metal superstar--he deserves every success he has earned, and in doing so, it is clear to see that he is one of the greats, not just as a musician, but as a man. Mustaine should thank his lucky stars to have met him. Love him or hate him, I think Mustaine would have been a success no matter who was backing him up, but MEGADETH would not have been superstars without Ellefson all those years.In sum, Mustaine also made a comment that Ellefson is not someone you'd want in your foxhole, mostly because he is not a fighter (in the physical sense). I disagree. Ellefson is a fighter of a different kind, and one of the first people I'd want with me in a band, on a team, or as a friend. Read and enjoy!

I really enjoyed getting a personal look into the life of Dave Ellefson from Megadeth. He is a very grounded man. Some readers might be annoyed by the attention he gives to his faith, but personally, I really liked hearing about how his faith is the bedrock for his long term sobriety. I get the feeling that he is a very caring man and down to earth, as evidenced by the great many people who have said nice things about him over the years.

An excellent story. It chronicles Dave's journey from Midwest roots to the L.A. metal scene. His bizarre introduction to the other Dave in Megadeth. Then eventually the horrible dependency on heroine and alcohol. The tact put forth while being simultaneously candid is well done. Also covered is: the legal battle, the years between both Megadeth stints, and the really cool burying of the hatchet. Friendship and a shared faith end up still having a place in the World.

Any fan of Megadeth will LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this book. While never a substance abuser myself, I have worked with many, and Dave describes his struggles so well you will feel like you are right there with him. He never shies away from telling you how difficult drug addiction is to beat or the rewards once he became clean and sober.. it is very honest and insightful as to both experiences. It is nice to see that Dave is as kind and open as he is talented. In short, it is very well written, insightful, revealing, and honest. One cannot ask for more than that.I also have to admit that I am a HUGE fan of Megadeth, especially of Dave Mustaine and Dave Ellefson, so this book was a true treat for me to read. I am so happy to see Megadeth back as strong as ever musically and stronger than ever personally.

I love this book. Dave's got a great story and I enjoyed reading it. Mr. Ellefson shops occasionally in a store where I work and I was able to have him autograph it for me which made it even better. I'm not even that big of a Megadeth fan but after hearing about his life and then reading the book, I'm so glad I picked it up. I'm a big fan of reading this type of book from the bands that I grew up with.So glad to hear about Dave becoming a Christian as well. I was a rock n roll kid who became a Christian too.

It's a fast read and an incredible inside look at the life of David Ellefson, his struggles with being the typical rock star in the 80's with substance abuse, and how he used faith to recover and rebuild his life. David is a class act and he keeps the stories, drama, and reasons for past member's departures to a minimum. If you want those stories, read Dave Mustaine's book as well, if you haven't already. I'm really looking forward to the second book!

Read it cover to cover in two days! Dave (Junior) is a nice guy in a nasty business, and his compassion and humanity shine through in this autobiography. If anyone watches his great youtube posts from the road, DE is the kind of guy you would love to hang out with and talk to about exactly what he is writing in this book - the incredible story of Megadeth and the difficulties of surviving in the music industry. It also gives us over-aged bass players a way to live the rock star dream vicariously. Thank you for sharing this wonderful story of success and family.

Thoroughly enjoyed reading about his ups and downs and how recovery very played a huge part and still does in his life. He sounds like a great man all around, not perfect, but willing to put it out there and show his struggles and overcoming.

I had always ignored Munro until the moment she won the Nobel Prize. I mean, how could a woman who wrote about such mundane things ever interest me. How wrong I was. Her writing soars, no gimmicks, just clear, deceptively simple prose with startling insight. These stories are devastatingly beautiful, especially Silence, which i devoured only to realize after that nothing really happened in the story. As much as I love great writing, I also love plot and crave action, I need the story to move. And Munro did move me, though not in the way I'd expected, in a way I almost disliked but still couldn't help being moved. Her characters are unpredictable and seem not to know what they're going to do until they actually do them, and though this might at times make them seem unbelievable, since they're far from what we've come to expect in modern fiction, these women are superbly crafted, not to mention sort of crazy. Even the young girl in the story Trespasses was disturbing and there was a nice twist at the end. I also liked Tricks even though the twist has been used many times before (a thing Munro herself alludes to). All in all, this was an excellent collection. I will be reading Munro for the rest of my life.

Alice Munro is a wonderful storyteller. She is an expert in short story writing, and I have read enough of them to compare. Runaway is no exception. After having read Dear Life, I thought I would try Runaway, after reading the sterling reviews on the book. I must say I was not disappointed. Personally, I like a writer who focuses on the depth of the character, on what makes them "tick", so to speak. Every story in this book had this type of character. Maybe it's just because I can identify with them, and say to myself, "yes, I know how they feel". All I know is that each one is so richly developed, likable or not. I highly recommend, and cannot wait to read another book by this author.

I’ve always loved Alice Munro’s stories. The first collection I read was Something I’ve Been Meaning to Tell You, back in college. Her writing style is simple but the writing is thought-provoking. I often can’t help but thinking about her story for many days after I read it. Very often I read a story many times but still don’t get it completely. I think that’s how a good piece of literature should feel, the meaning is there but it leaves plenty of room for interpretation.

This book was unlike any I have read, with possibly the exception of "Olive Kittridge." The stories were deeply detailed; I sometimes wondered why certain passages were included. But, for the most part, I found them interesting and thought provoking. Each story touched on a turning point in a character's life; some event or realization that altered her perception of her life and surroundings, both past and present. The book was somewhat of a testament to how our views and opinions change as we grow older and learn to accept and appreciate our mortality. A strange and memorable read, my first of Alice Monro; I believe I will read more.

I am not usually a fan of short stories but this book may have converted me. Alice Munro's collection hits you where it hurts. She is not a "happy" writer, but a soulful one. At times, you feel as though she has peeked in your closet or underwear drawer and found out about your heartaches or secrets. For the "loner" who doesn't really want to feel "oh-so-alone", this collection may make you feel, somehow, inexplicably connected to the world. I read and re-read pages because I didn't want to let go of the feelings she stirred with a few well-chosen words. If you don't connect with someone in one of her stories, you either haven't lived, are exceptionally lucky, or haven't thought about the complexity of the human spirit, the randomness of life events, or the dimensions of a well-experienced life.

Alice Munro - you can't just read her once. You've got to read her again, and again, and again.Her stories written about women and men who live lives - like you and I - quietly going about their days, wondering if they missed out on that great big love, or that great big chance; arguing with their children, or their parents, or both; pretending that life is grand, pretending that life isn't pointless.She writes lush, beautiful tales which are long and enjoyable to read. I'm reading her again, soon.

I listened to the fine audio version of this and recommend it highly. Munro has the ability to take plots which if described mechanically, as one reviewer did, can sound formulaic (one could say the same of Shakespeare) but never read that way. Sometimes we want to know more, as her characters do, but Munro recognizes the falsity in that. A less talented writer would have made Juliet's story into a tragic melodrama but instead she gives us a haunting portrayal of the consequences of Juliet's character and her choices. Great fiction doesn't always give us what we think we want, but instead helps us understand more fully the challenges of living. She is as deserving of a Nobel prize as any living writer in english. The first story, the title story, was in some ways the weakest. It is pretty good, but if you are a little uncertain after reading it, keep going.One of the reviewers seems to think that Munro is southern, which, of course, she is not.

Brilliant writer has done it again. I missed this collection, but with the film Julieta coming out, I wanted to read the source material (3 of the stories).
