I should have paid more attention to the second paragraph in the description. What I read was " explores how Joan of Arc changed the course of history and remains a figure of fascination centuries after her extraordinary life and death". That is not what the book is really about, it is not about the history of Joan of Arc's final days. Instead the book is a series of poems as though spoken by those living at the time of Joan of Arc. That would not be so bad but the poems are not written as simple pages but as circles, ellipses and so on, making some of them essentially unreadable.
Somehow I missed the description of this book, which is a sort of story in verse form. In an afterword, the author says he tried to tell the story in a form that mirrored an ancient telling of Joan of Arc's story, but the story wouldn't cooperate. So, instead, he tells it through medieval poetic forms and in the voices of the people and objects in Joan of Arc’s life.I've heard that this is a trend, novels in poetic form, and I've seen Kwame Alexander's books. I can't say it's my favorite way to read a story, but it certainly is creative. In Mr. Elliott's book, people who knew Joan, fought under her command, or who captured and put her on trial, all get a chance to speak. Joan herself speaks, but so do arrows, pitchforks, dresses and fires. On some of these pages, the poems are printed in the shape of the object -- the three-pronged pitchfork, or the pointed arrowhead. The author also employs different type sizes and fonts to add another layer of visual interest to the story.I can't say I'm a poetry reader. I'm a "just the facts, ma'am" nonfiction reader. But I approached the book with an open mind and have to say, I do find it a fresh and clever way to tell a well-known story. It certainly could serve as an effective entryway for young people encountering a historical figure for the first time. I do think, however, that a reader might benefit from knowing the broad outline of the story before reading this book. If I had read the book with no knowledge of Joan of Arc's life, I might have lost interest, the tension of her fate draining away in the poetic telling.
Jeanne d'Arc (1412 - 1431) is a much beloved French saint. She had visions of the Archangels and various saints instructing her to defend the then uncrowned Charles VII and liberate France from English rule. Jeanne d'Arc, who was illiterate and claimed "not to know A from B," took up the banner. She cut her hair and disguised herself as a man so as to enter battle. Sadly, despite her military success, Jeanne d'Arc was burned at the stake.In 1456 Jeanne d'Arc was declared a martyr and in 1909 was officially canonized.That is the background to this brilliantly written biography. The "voices" are those of people who knew the young saint and are written in poetic form in the style during which Jeanne d'Arc lived. Readers get a feel for and flavor of the times covered in the book and learn about the family members of and landmarks in the young saint's life. Readers come away feeling as if they "know" her and gain a greater appreciation for what she was able to accomplish in her short lifetim
I was deeply moved by this book about Joan of Arc’s final hours of life. Using the forms of villanelles, sestinas, and other poetic forms popular during Joan’s lifetime, our author allows people such as Joan’s father and mother, King Charles VII, Robert de Baudricourt and others to tell the reader about Joan. The author also uses these poetic forms to allow Joan’s sewing needle, her sword, her red dress, her tunic, and other inanimate objects to tell the reader about Joan. These particular poems are printed in the shape of the inanimate objects each represents. Also, among these poems are words written as if Joan, too, was telling us about all that had happened to her. In addition, there are direct quotes taken from her trials. All of these pieces fit together like a harmonious puzzle to create a very moving and tender account of the prejudices that Joan faced and the truly amazing triumphs that she accomplished as a young woman in a man’s world. I love this book! It is utterly unforgettable!I was given a free copy of this book in exchange for an unbiased review.
