I enjoyed this book, as I am confident that any dog lover would. Each short segment or chapter is written by a different author, who shares their own individual experiences with various dogs they have adopted. Most of these contributions include humor, all of them reflect respect and appreciation for the dogs they've befriended. Some of the associations and reflections are touching, but this is far from being a "sad" or melancholy read....that it definately is not. The chapters are short, each easily readable in 10 or 15 minutes.Anyone who appreciates the special relationship between humans and dogs will enjoy this book. Readers will see many of their own feelings and experiences as they read "Good Dog".

I subscribe to Garden and Gun and Good Dog is the first article I read every month, so I was excited to see and order the book. In the magazine there is always a GREAT cartoon illustration to accompany every article. Unfortunately, they did not make it to the book. That is the only reason I did not give it 5 stars

Purchased for a young grandchild who pick it out. I did not realize it's an adult book which most readers likely already know since it has Garden & Gun in large letters at the bottom of the cover. An adult would have been explaining many terms if I hadn't hidden it after I read it. But I'm thankful grandchild did pick it out and fortunate I read it first. Incredibly moving stories.

As a writer of stories I am always on the look out for good stories. I found it with this book. The stories range from simple to no so simple in the wonderful world of dogs. The stories touch all the emotions as a good story will do. With the world a train wreck during these hard times, the dog always seems to continue to offer a safe and wonderful place to hide from this world we live in. It seems to me that you could easily find some more of these great stories to make a Good Dog part 2. Thanks to the author for bringing these stories together in this book!!!!!

I'm a dog guy. I have a German Shepherd, English Shepherd, and Ridgeback something or other all sleeping with a few feet of me as I write this. A good woman, a good dog, and a good truck make for a good life. Some of these writers understand that, some don't. There is one great joke in this book, some great stories. Worth reading. And no, you will not learn anything new about dogs in this book, just maybe understand your place in dog world a little better.

These are short stories taken straight from "Garden and Gun" magazine. If you love dogs, you'll love this collection of stories all about dogs and previously published in the magazine. Garden and Gun magazine hires top-notch writers to write a dog story for each issue, and these are some of the best. You'll laugh, cry, and maybe even be impressed with the feats of the dogs in these stories. GREAT bed-time book, as each story is only a few pages long. Buy TWO and give one as a gift to your dog loving friend.

More essays than stories, these short pieces are mostly taken from a column in the magazine Garden and Gun. Of course, some are better than others, but all are interesting and are many are quite amusing. There is an emphasis on the South, hunting, and hounds; some of these hounds can actually hunt as the authors explain. Being from the North and a large city, I found something new in this aspect of dogs. I also especially enjoyed the stories of beloved mixed-breed dogs, including pit bulls. A book by dog lovers for dog lovers!

I listened to this book as an audiobook. I enjoyed the stories about dogs and their people.

Having met Arthur C Clarke in the late 60's, not long after seeing 2001 for the umpteenth time, I looked forward to reading this book. What happened amazed me. The author presents events, discussing things the way they might have been, and then discussing the final scene or dialog. As each revelation unfolds I found myself recalling each scene vividly, intensely. It was like the film was playing as I read. The parsity of illustration was no bother, I remembered the film and my attendent awe. Great detail not previously annotated in other books. A wonderful history of a pivotal point in cinema.

If, like me, you are an unabashed fan of “2001: A Space Odyssey” then this book is required reading. Drawing upon exhaustive research, author Michael Benson takes the reader behind the scenes of arguably the greatest science fiction movie of all time. It’s all here, from first concepts to finished film and its aftermath. So many facets of the production are covered, including the lengthy writing (and re-writing) process, prep, design, special effects, costume/wardrobe, stunts, sound, music, and so much more. There is a lot of meat to this book, and precious little fat. The shooting of 2001 was a protracted and sometimes brutal affair, and all due credit to Benson for not flinching from some of the less salubrious aspects. Although far from the first (and almost certainly not the last) book to be written on Kubrick’s magnum opus, this is so far — by my reckoning, at least — the most essential. Film students, film lovers, and fans of 2001 from the casual to the hardcore will all want to pick this one up. It’s truly engrossing.

Remarkable book, very impressive research. Didn’t realize there could be so many more behind-the-scenes stories about “2001” that I’d never heard. Very timely and recommended.~ EDIT (4/4/18):Quality control note: The photos in the color section of the book are lower contrast and look unnecessarily faded (presumably due to the printer chintzing on ink). Ironic, considering the legendary perfectionism of the book’s major subject.I’m tempted to deduct a star (as Kubrick himself wouldn’t have been pleased), but this is otherwise a five-star work. Hopefully the author / publisher will rectify this shortcoming in future printings.

I've spent my life reading everything I can about this landmark movie. Yet, there was much in this well-written book that was new and fascinating. Above all, it is well-composed and is an excellent perspective on the creative achievement of making "2001". Indispensable for anyone interested in this topic.

For younger readers interested in the process of making motion pictures,”Odyssey” explains the intensity of an artist, Stanley Kubrick, who is determined to bring his vision to the screen. For those of us that grew up with the film as an iconic experience, it reminds us of the collective genius of the director and his team in bringing it to the screen in those pre-digital days.I particularly appreciate Michael Benson’s frankness in his telling of the relationships that Kubrick had with his actors, with Arthur C. Clarke, Douglas Trumbull, and others. It provides not just an insight to a remarkably complex man or even a group of individuals, but also the tensions, both positive and negative, that are inevitably party of such a massive creative endeavor.I highly recommend this book for cinephiles, science fiction fans, or those interested in the literature and history of the 1960’s.

This is a valuable contribution to the literature on 2001 that provides considerable detail and insight into the film, including original research and many anecdotes and interviews not previously published.It is puzzling, given the space devoted to the contributions of Doug Trumbull and the access Benson had to Trumbull, that no mention is made of Trumbull's own film, 1972's Silent Running. That film depicts a spacecraft's encounter with Saturn, something Kubrick had contemplated for 2001 before being forced to abandon the effort as too daunting due to budgetary and time constraints. (As Benson notes, Saturn is the ultimate destination of Discovery in Clarke's novel.)Most puzzling is the one error of fact I noted: Benson says that 2001 was "nominated for four [Oscars], including Best Picture" (p. 436). The film did indeed receive four nominations (Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, Best Production Design, and Best Visual Effects, the one award it received), but not for Best Picture. The Best Picture nominees that year were Oliver! (the winner), Funny Girl, The Lion in Winter, Rachel, Rachel, and Romeo and Juliet.

I saw the movie in it's original 70mm release format in London and it's remained in my top 5 all-time favorite list ever since. The author of this book has done exhaustive research and pulls together unused material from several prior publications to create the most detailed 'making of' book imaginable.I thoroughly enjoyed reading it and have never got through such a large book in so short a time before as i followed the process from the original collaboration with Arthur C Clarke through the early creation of some of the Stargate VFX, the virtual takeover of MGM's UK studios, the various attempts at the creation and choreographing of the Dawn of Man characters as well as the recording of the (unused) orchestral score.A fabulously informative book that I will treasure.

I’ve been a 2001 addict since 1968, seen it 20+ times and read anything and everything about it. Even visited the Kubrick archives in London for a quick look-see. And with all that, I learned many new things in reading this fantastic book. It is comprehensive, interesting, fair and balanced (Kubrick was some piece of work) and well-written. My congratulations and thanks to the author, who has done a terrific job. Recommended highly.

This book was a great help to us! We recently took a family trip and wanted to do longer day hikes, 2-3 hours and 4-6 miles and wanted to be sure that a 7 year old could keep up. We found the detailed descriptions in this book to be extremely helpful! and we enjoyed several hikes that we probably wouldn't have known about or would have been intimidated to try based on some of the small descriptions in the official National Park guides. Our bigger hikes were the Alum Cave Bluff hike and Cucumber Gap/Little River Trail, and we enjoyed them a lot. We also did some smaller trails and drives in the park. As much as I liked this book, I would advise anyone to stop in one of the National Park Visitor's Centers and buy their excellent trail maps for about $1 each--as we planned each day, we use the NPS guides to find the area we wanted to go to, get a general idea of hikes available, then we used this book to read more about it. Between these two sources and some websites, you can put together appropriate hikes for your situation, I think-- When we visit another National Park, I will look for more guides by this company.

This book has detailed info on each hike and pictures of what you'll see, so it really helps you decide which of a dozen hikes you want to go on if you have limited time. When I can see a photo of the view from xyz summit, then I know "that's the hike I want". It tells you where to park, how to find the trail head - everything you need in one place.

I used both the soft cover and the Kindle version and found the text a great resource. I was able to cut and paste trail info into my phone from the Kindle version and it came in handy. It kept us from an extended hike when we went with what was written in the book rather than what our intuition told us at the end of a trail where we met two roads.There was great advice in the book on what to take and what time, etc, to hit the trails and how to avoid crowds.Safety thoughts: A hiker became lost on one of the popular trails we hiked, ended up trapped in some thick rhododendrons, and they died of exposure before being found. It's a good idea to download trail info onto your phone (i.e. AllTrails or MapMyHike) and download this area to your phone maps app for offline use. While cell service was pretty spotty, the location for downloaded maps worked fine and we could refer to it to confirm our position. A handheld GPS is an option but the trails seemed well maintained and it seemed it would be difficult to get lost if staying on the trail. Don't wander too far off trail for any bathroom breaks and take a whistle, ESPECIALLY if hiking alone.I saw no negatives to this book.

This is my second top trails guide. I also own their zion book. I have to say I love this as a reference. The small detail maps are pretty accurate, making it simple to find them on my bigger map. I love the breakdowns of the trails. It makes decoding on a specific trails so much easier. Especially since I usually have only a few days in a park. This lets me pick exactly the type of trails I want. Peaks, solitude, autumn colors? Check! The graph makes all of these and more indicators easy to sift thru.

Nice that it includes elevation profiles. I also bought the Falcon Guide as I like to compare and contrast several sources when selecting and planning hikes. We just returned from a great week of day hiking GSMNP and this book (along with Internet sites) was much more helpful than the Falcon guide.

Last year we used a different book to backpack Mt. Sterling and found the descriptions to be subpar and unfortunately got us semi-lost and reaching the top in the dark and cold. Dangerous to say the least! So this year for Maddron Bald I searched many books and bought this one for my Kindle App on my iPhone. The descriptions and mileage points were so spot on! I used my Garmin Forerunner I normally use for running to keep track of mileage and it was nice to know what was ahead. It even pointed us to some vistas me might have otherwise passed by. I highly recommend this book not only for choosing a destination, but also to keep you safe and "found" in the backcountry.

I met Johnny Molloy recently while hiking in the Shenandoah National Park. He hiked for a few miles with me and my dogs and I completely enjoyed talking to him. This book has all the details I crave to know about trails. I only wish he would do such a review for every one of the 500 miles of trails in the SNP.

Love the way this is organized! Read lots of reviews about which guidebook to purchase and glad I went with this one! It's black and white (vs. color photos) inside but that didn't bother me. The trail guides are comprehensive and easy to understand. Can't wait to start checking them off!

Corporal Thomas Wallace Colley’s, (Company D, Confederate States of America (CSA) 1st Virginia Cavalry Regiment), diary, correspondence, and recollections of his time during the Civil War are now published in his In Memory of Self and Comrades: Thomas Wallace Colley’s Recollections of Civil War Service in the 1st Virginia Cavalry. Professor Michael K. Shaffer of Kenneshaw State University, the author of Washington County Virginia in the Civil War, edited, annotated, and structured an exhaustive collection of Colley’s diaries, correspondence, personal notes, and Bible annotations which were provided to him by Colley’s grandchildren.The book has 13 chapters, five appendices, 37 illustrations/photographs, and nine maps in 310 pages. There is also a footnotes section, index, and a five-page bibliography. Professor Shaffer accessed not only Colley’s papers, but also an exhaustive number of federal and state government archives, numerous university archive collections, as well as private/personal collections and archives, and extensive website searches to document and annotate Colley’s writings.Corporal Colley was an unique and striking soldier, and then the “biographer” of his Regiment’s soldiers and officers during the war. Colley was born in Abingdon, Virginia in Washington County which is located in southwest Virginia on the Virginia-Tennessee border. Before the war, he was a bricklayer who helped build some of the buildings at Emory & Henry College (E&HC) in Emory, VA which is north of Abingdon. E&HC played a later, harder role in Colley’s life: he recuperated from his foot amputation at Emory Hospital, and both Brigadier General William E. “Grumble” Jones (USMA Class of 1854), and Major General James Ewell Brown (“JEB”) Stuart (USMA Class of 1854) graduated from E&HC before attending West Point. At the beginning of the war, he enlisted into the CSA and was assigned to Company D of the 1st Virginia Cavalry Regiment, perhaps the best known of the Virginia cavalry units because of its commander: “JEB” Stuart. Colley was right in the middle of the 1st’ Cavalry’s major engagements of the war beginning with 1st Manassas(“Bull Run”), the Peninsula Campaign, ”Stuart’s Ride,” and Kelley’s Ford. The memoirs do not however provide narratives on all the 1st’s engagements including Gettysburg because he was recuperating from being shot in the abdomen during the battle of Kelly’s Ford on March 17, 1863.The book provides Colley’s narration of these battles, his actions, and his sharp commentary on the battles, the leadership (or lack of leadership) of the officers, and the actions of his fellow company mates. Colley also commented on a variety of CSA as well as Union (“yankee”) generals including his friend, “Grumble” Jones. The book provides the all-important maps of these engagements which are not only large and easy to read, but precise in the details. During his three(3) years of active service, Colley was wounded in action three times. His final wound caused the loss of his left foot and he was discharged from active duty. He returned to Washington County to recover his strength, and remain out of the “fight” however reluctantly.After the war was over, Colley got married, and pursued a variety of civilian jobs including deputy sheriff of Washington County, failed businessman, factory worker in South Carolina, Commissioner of Revenue, and college student. His post-war life became consumed by his correspondence on the war in journals, newspaper articles, letters to his fellow veterans, and confederate magazines including Confederate Veteran, Southern Historical Society, and the United Confederate Veterans. He wrote the obituaries of his comrades in arms. Colley also “came to God” following the war, due in part to the effects of the war and his amputation in what is now generally thought of as “Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder” in today’s terminology. He helped organize and build the Methodist Washington Chapel Church in Abingdon. Colley organized a chapter of the United Confederate Veterans, and devoted his life to his veteran friends/comrades through his extensive correspondence which is detailed in his diaries and personal files. Professor Shaffer included a select number of his letters to his family in the book.It is this extensive body of correspondence, and the bibliographic sources/footnotes that makes In Memory of Self and Comrades a vital and necessary collection to Civil War history. His narration of the 1st Cavalry’s actions, and his observations on campaigning provide a “real” sense of everyday life during the war. In short, this memoir is one of the best Civil War memoirs written to date. It ranks as military history and narration alongside of USMC Captain John W. Thomason, Jr.’s FIX BAYONETS for WW1, and USMC Eugene Sledge’s With the Old Breed for WW2.
