In 2002, the law firm for which I worked was involved in the Dollar General debacle, helping clean up the mess after the company restated financial statements due to massive accounting fraud. I didn’t know much about Dollar General at the time. But I do remember that a firm partner told me that one of the company’s directors had succinctly described their business model to him. “We sell [crap], to poor people.” Cal Turner, Jr., has written this book to explain that business model and his part in it."My Father’s Business" has three threads. It is a history of Dollar General as a small, scrappy business. Then it is a history of Dollar General as big business. And intertwined throughout are elements of religious tract (the title is a play on words, the relevant “father” being both God and Cal Turner, Jr.’s own father, the original Cal Turner). Actually, despite the title, the religious elements are fairly light—Turner is a devout Methodist, a group not given to aggressive evangelization. But to his credit, he is not apologetic about the importance of his religious belief, something refreshing in today’s publishing environment. I’m a bit put off by some instances of how he applies his faith, but as Pope Francis says, who am I to judge? It’s the early history of Dollar General that interested me most, since my own post-law background is as entrepreneur. Most books about entrepreneurship are totally clueless, or a pack of lies. Charles Koch’s "Good Profit," for example, is an awful, worthless book. Peter Thiel’s "Zero to One," with its focus on monopoly and reek of private equity money, has nothing to do with the gutter struggles of real entrepreneurs, the type that made America. Turner experienced that gutter struggle firsthand—really, his grandfather and his father more than him, but the business was still quite small when he started working at Dollar General, in the early 1950s. While my experience is in manufacturing, and Turner’s in distribution and sales, many of the same challenges arise, and they are not challenges understood by anyone who has not run a business on a shoestring. Turner, or rather his father, did, and Turner does a good job of conveying what that’s like, with anecdotes both amusing and heartbreaking, such as his father spending every Saturday night for many years calling every store manager to figure out what cash he would get the following week, so he could decide which vendors’ bills to pay.In fact, cash flow is the single biggest concern for any real entrepreneur, and stores that keep inventory, like Dollar General, tend to face the most challenges. As a result, real entrepreneurs are always worried about bankruptcy, which can happen even if a business is profitable. Cal Turner, Sr., used to half-joke when he got a good buy on some goods that “If I have to declare bankruptcy, I won’t be embarrassed to tell the judge what I paid for this inventory I can’t get rid of.” Similarly, Turner mentions that his grandfather, Luther Turner, “bought a farm and put it in [his wife’s] name so that if the company went under, all of them could return to the land and start over.” For years I kept all my assets in my wife’s name for the same reason—so I could collapse our business and we would not be left destitute, but could begin again. To this day, my thoughts revolve around the need to prepare for that possibility. This sort of thing, necessary because of the enormous risks, is the norm among entrepreneurs. Nor do most people realize that entrepreneurs can’t borrow money like you read about in the news. If they can get a loan at all, entrepreneurs pay high interest rates where big companies pay zero interest rates, thanks to the government, and the entrepreneur also has to personally guarantee the loan, so he’ll be personally ruined if the company can’t pay.But most other people, working eight-hour days, simply don’t understand any of this, the risks and the amount of work and sacrifice required, at any level. Nor, of course, do politicians, like Elizabeth Warren with her infamous “you didn’t build that” screed. She, like probably 98% of the people in Congress, has never built anything, or taken any material risk, in her entire life. Reading this short book would be a good requirement for any politician before taking office. The simple fact is that a very small group of people are the producers of most of the economic value in a society; without them, that is, without their drive and organization, output would be vastly lower. That’s one thing Ayn Rand got right, and when you read Marxists claiming that workers can run their own factories, you know you are reading someone with no actual experience of business.Cash problems went away pretty early in his career for Cal Turner, however, since the company went public in 1963. From this point on the book was less interesting to me; it became a chronicle of ever larger acquisitions, along with discussion of family troubles, as Turner, by his account, just had to get rid of his father (right after his mother died), as well as his brother, and leave himself in charge. No choice in the matter, you see. Jesus told him to do it, in fact, when He said that every branch that doesn’t bear fruit should be pruned. Maybe so, but I’d be curious for some Rashomon-type viewpoints. Turner also seems addicted to “management training” and “strategic planning” which I think is dubious in most cases, along with “individual value statements,” which are dubious in all cases. (I could never understand at business school why people who had never run a business were not only allowed to teach “strategy,” but were held in great respect.) On the other hand, Turner was by the 1970s running a very large company, quite far-flung, so perhaps external training was helpful to weld people together into common action. In many places, Turner describes a number of completely illegal practices under the securities laws that the company engaged in, including overt lying over decades. Yet he claims he was completely shocked when in 2002 it turned out that due to his complicity and negligence (not that he admits it), the company’s books were fraudulent and he was forced out—really, fired. Nor does Turner mention that in 2005 the SEC sued him and four other officers for accounting fraud, and he personally paid a fine of a million dollars. Instead, he complains “Everybody seemed to have a stake in making us look bad. The process was terribly injurious and punitive, and a lot of people were getting hurt.” He moans about how unfair it was that someone could accuse a “values-based leader” like himself of, gasp, “cooking the books.” (He also talks about his “time in the barrel at the SEC”; I don’t think he, or rather his ghostwriter, looked up the origin of that metaphor.) It’s tiresome and lacks any sense of humility.Turner could afford the fine. He’s a billionaire, not that he mentions that in the book either. (He does seem to leave out quite a few things in which the reader would be interested; I’m sure there’s more that I’m just not catching.) Nor does he mention the ancient Christian question of the salvation of the rich. This is a question that concerns me, though. Between Christ’s injunction to the rich young man to sell all that he had and give it to the poor, and the admonition about rich men, camels, and needle’s eyes, I should probably lie awake at night. On the other hand, my fallback position is that of Zacchaeus the publican. After all, he got direct approval from Jesus to only give away 50%, and he was an actual fraudster, so I figure 50% is a ceiling, not a floor. Between that and pointing to my wife and saying “I’m with her,” I hope to still gain admittance from Saint Peter. Wish me luck!Anyway, my guess is that the primary reason Turner wrote this book is that he, and the rest of his family, have been mostly erased from history by today’s Dollar General. If you go to the Wikipedia entry for the company, it’s all about boring details after Turner’s firing. He, his father, and grandfather, only get a few sentences. After 2002, the company was soon turned into an arm of private equity (then eventually went public again), and their PR firm doubtless scrubbed the entry. Wikipedia most definitely does not mention any part of the episode that got Turner fired. But despite Turner’s best efforts to put a shiny gloss on Dollar General’s business, it still has the slightly dirty feel of all businesses that fall somewhere along the line between catering to, and taking advantage of, the poor. Dollar stores are, after all, the same basic type of business as pawnbrokers and payday lenders. On the other hand, Dollar General today, and throughout its history, does seem to be remarkably free of leftist cant—you can’t find any on their current website, and Turner certainly offers none. That’s a rare treat today in the age of social justice warrior corporations. And aside from serving areas that often lack stores (although I am curious if the company, like WalMart, also pushes aside existing local business), the company has for decades offered the real service of upward mobility, since anyone competent can climb the corporate ladder. True, I don’t think Dollar General is especially Jesus-approved, as Cal Turner would have it, but it’s a decent business that provides value to the poor in consumer goods and jobs. That is a niche that has been very good to Cal Turner, and, also, for the most part, been a boon to many poor areas of America. On balance, Cal Turner should be proud of his life, and if you like this type of book, his story is worth reading.

I have a bookshelf full of half-read books, but this is not one of them. My Father’s Business reads more like a conversation with the author. Cal Turner will give you lots to think about, and you will likely find yourself reading it again some day.

Got this book on Wednesday June 20th and will have it finished tonight, June 22nd. The picture of Cal Sr. driving his mothers 1955 Pontiac sums up what took this mom and pop store to a whole new level. It was fun, raw selling and hustling, good old fashioned unsophisticated business. Mind you, business was a whole lot easier in the 50's and 60's, but you have to admire Dollar General for being a force all these years. Almost bought their stock, but I would never want to compete with Amazon or Walmart.

I found "My Father's Business" to be interesting and engrossing, as it shed light on the astonishing growth of Dollar General and its transformation from a seat-of-the-pants family business to a Fortune 500 public company. Along the way, family relationships needed to give way for the business to fulfill its mission. The missional, indeed religious, dimension of the book helps sets it apart, as does its ease of reading. I was impressed by how forthcoming Cal Turner, Jr. was in telling his story and that of Dollar General. I now know a good bit more about the DG store I drive past nearly every day.

This is a truly inspiring story of small town values and working hard to achieve the American Dream. Cal Turner tells this fascinating story through his own eyes and takes the reader on an exciting journey of how his family built the Dollar General brand into the monumentally successful company it is today by focusing on what really matters - serving the needs of others and providing everyday value to customers with honesty and integrity. If you are looking to be inspired professionally and personally, My Father's Business really hits the mark.

My Father's Business is a very helpful look at the personal and corporate growth that took place inside one of America's most successful retailers. Cal Turner's honesty is refreshing and inspiring.I was particularly inspired by the way Cal Turner's faith and sense of purpose guided his leadership at Dollar General. There is a lot of wisdom in here. I recommend for anyone who wants to see the intersection of faith and work.

As easy a read as you'll find. Cal Turner built a fortune 500 company by putting his customers first. From the decision to cut out advertising in order to reduce prices to refusing to sell cigarettes and beer because they weren't in the customer's best interest, it's hard not to impressed by many of the bold decisions that Turner took during his time at the helm of DG.

My Father's Business is a great story about a family that gave IT ALL to their amazing business for such a simple mission, "Serving Others". It is refreshing to have such a successful CEO open up and share personal stories that molded him, his family and the business that he led to huge success. The book starts and finishes with a genuine message from the author about how important his faith played a role in his life and how he hopes this book helps the reader find their own path to success in carrying out their "Father's business". Must read!

#366,406 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

This book goes through a history of the multiple Brooklyn baseball teams in the three decades from 1850. These eventually coalesced, despite some temporary name changes along the way, into the Brooklyn Dodgers. The author then gives a history of the team - key players, managers and owners - from the late 19th century to the mid-twentieth century. However, for a book that purports to tell "the story" of the Brooklyn Dodgers, it has ambiguities, omissions and mistakes, and is desperately in need of a good editor. To begin, there is a photograph of the Brooklyn team of 1888. The author's caption "identifies" the players by their position in each row. But as some players were standing, sitting and in between, it is impossible to tell who is in which row. The caption does nothing to assist the reader and therefore the author's "identification" of the players is useless. Then there are the mistakes. The author has another picture, this one of the 1916 World Series, which he captions "...shows the only scoring action in the second game." As he states below that the final score was 2-1, there obviously were two more "scoring actions" in that game.Under a picture of Casey Stengel, the author writes that "...he led the Yankees to championships year in and year out in the 1950s and 1960s."Stengel's last Yankee pennant championship was in 1960; that single year hardly qualifies as "the 1960s". And while he did win eight pennants in the 1950s, he lost in two years; that was most of the decade but not "year in and year out".Then there are the omissions. The small one is in the caption of a picture Manager Wilbert Robinson and pitcher Rube Marquard. The caption says the pitcher's delivery was like a dance step he performed with his movie star wife. Having pointed out that she was a movie star begs the question: which movie star was his wife? But the author just ignores that.Another omission is Game 4 of the 1947 World Series. Cookie Lavagetto's pinch-hit double in the ninth inning breaking up Bill Beven's no-hitter was a historic moment in Brooklyn. But the author completely ignores it.But the biggest omission is with the 1950s Dodgers. The book's back page blurb claims "A large part of Brooklyn Dodgers is dedicated to those teams of the 1950s..." That is pure hype - and completely false. The key part of the book - covering the "Boys of Summer" - is in Chapter Eight, a very slim chapter and a very small part of the book. The 1955 World Series win is there, as are some of players. But just as many are not. A book about the 50s Dodgers not mentioning mainstay relief pitcher Clem Labine, making no note of Carl Furillo's unique ability to play balls hit off the concave right field wall - nor of his rifle arm throwing out runners at home plate - and not noting that Don Newcombe was not only an outstanding pitcher but was often used as a pinch hitter is hardly telling the Dodgers story. The book needed another dozen pages to cover the 1950s teams. It is a shame that this book, while giving much history, is such a letdown dealing with the key Dodger decade.

Author Mark Rucker has gotten hold of some priceless photographs from the Dodger archives in writing “Images of Sports: Brooklyn Dodgers” for ARCADIA PUBLISHING. Rucker includes photos of some of the most significant moments in Dodgers history, including Jackie Robinson staring at home as Bobby Thomson crosses the plate to give the Giants the pennant in 1951, and the great catch by Sandy Amoros in the 1955 World Series to help preserve the game 7 win for Johnny Podres. Balancing these moments of gravitas are spring training shots of Hugh Casey wearing a huge sombrero and of Harold “Pee Wee” Reese signing some autographs at Vero Beach. The book is divided into eight chapters, with the first page of each chapter containing a single photograph that is about twice the size of the other photographs in the book. Other than the introductory pages, generally, all pages of the book have two photographs on them.Among the nuggets of information that Rucker includes in his book are naming the pitcher who Joe DiMaggio called the “meanest man” he had ever seen. (DiMaggio was referring to Whitlow Wyatt, a pitcher in the 1940’s for the Dodgers, who Rucker calls an “aggressive knockdown artist.”) In his chapter titled “1910-1919,” Rucker provides two great shots of future manager Casey Stengel in his playing days, reminding us that Stengel could also play the game, as he hit .364 in the 1916 World Series, leading the Dodgers in batting in the series. The book is not flawless, as second baseman Jerry Coleman is identified as a shortstop on page 121 and on page 117 Rucker states Erskine held the World Series strikeout record of 14 until 1967, when in fact it was 1963 that the record was broken. Rucker fails to point out that the pitcher doing the breaking was none other than Sandy Koufax, who struck out 15 Yankees in game 1 of the World Series. In an ideal world, I would have enjoyed seeing more prose, especially in the introduction to each chapter, allowing Rucker to elaborate on the rich history of the Brooklyn franchise. All in all, this was a quick and enjoyable read.Note: The author of this review is also the author of “Spring Training with the Washington Nationals,” published by FONTHILL MEDIA in April 2015. As with the “Brooklyn Dodgers,” the book on the Nationals is 128 pages and uses some excellent photographs to tell its story. All photographs in “Spring Training with the Washington Nationals are in color and are part of Fonthill’s “Images of Modern America” series.

Cairo has many parts...there is old Cairo...There is Coptic Cairo which was built on the old Roman Fort...called Babylon on the Nile. There is Old Fusat the original Islamic Settlement just north of the Roman Fort...Then there was Islamic Cairo...which was built further to the north of old Cairo, but away from the banks of the Nile because the flooding was not yet fully controlled...Then, last...after the floods were control...there was European Cairo, built in the 19th Century, as "Paris on the Nile," mainly with money acquired when the American Civil War caused cotton prices to soar...This book pictures the new European Cairo...on the Banks of the Nile...a small place compared to Cairo as a whole...but the most accessible part of Cairo to the Western Tourist... The Cairo of Shepheard's Hotel, The Midans, the Egyqtian Museum, Fallukas and the Cornishe...

I bought this book because I wanted to have a look at old Cairo, this part of the city that has been unspoiled by time and, unfortunately, neglected by men. I think the Egyptian Government should do something to restore and exploit these buildings for the sake of Cairo's beauty. The pictures are nice and the texts are mainly for those who have an architectural interest for Cairo's past. I am not an architect, though, and I enjoyed the book - perhaps because I love this city very much.

Very nice, thank you

I was expecting deliver in 3 days, to my surprise, it was there the next day. the book its self was another story, I was not hoping for a "picture book" not their fault
