It is unfortunate Horace is not read as much in English as are translations of Homer or Vergil, or Beowulf for that matter. Horace, in the whole sweep of history, has been one of the most influential of the great classical authors. As he explains in his poems, his "thing" was not to write epic narrative, but to write short poems, packed with meaning, imagery and sound. He models himself on Alcaeus and Pindar most of all, but on all the classical Greek lyrical poets really, and he conjures up a beautiful and enchanting, naturalistic and mythologized world of the ancient Mediterranean. These kind of poems are meant to be read over again, and even memorized and meditated upon - slightly different than epic, where you read more, and everything connects to everything else. Horace's poems make statements about life, death, society, morality, nationalism, fighting prowess, glory, love, sex, falling trees, the world, nature, the universe, animals, the gods, the supernatural, magic, etc, etc, etc! This kind of expansive cacophony needs lyric poetry to express itself in a comprehensible format, and lyric poetry needs a great mind and a great motivation to make itself written. Horace was perfectly placed for this. He had experience in war, peace and politics, in love and death, in poverty and wealth. He was highly educated in the Greek classics. He was close to the first Roman emperor's Prime Minister of state - Maecenas. Latin had virtually no great short poetry yet, and Horace was hired to create some. Otherwise, who would be motivated to write such things in an age without the internet or the printing press? We are lucky that he was motivated to write and we are lucky that the right man was hired for the job! His poetry became, along with Vergil's of course, the stamp of Romanness, and defined a civilization - a civilization that ours descends directly from. Horace's poetry was never forgotten, and was one of the most respected staples of a "proper education" right through the so-called "Dark" and Middle Ages, through the Renaissance, and well into the 20th Century! I do read Latin, but I highly recommend reading this stuff in English, since very few people read Latin well anymore. I like West's rhythmical, free verse. It is very convincing as English free verse, and it's giving you the Latin meaning very clearly. By all means, please do read it in Latin if you can! Then you can enjoy the poetical artistry of Horace directly. But even without Latin, West does a magnificent job of Englishing it. All people interested in poetry, literature, or Western Civilization generally should read and reread this book!

Long beloved for his compassion, his exquisite music, his own gentle life, the often-translated Horace is most beautifully given to us again by David West. Listen to Book II, Ode XI, Qui Bellicosus: "Life asks so little. Smooth-faced youth and beauty runs away behind us....drink, while we may, our grey heads perfumed with roses..." Horace describes himself as a Epicurean, choosing to live on the Sabine farm made possible by his friend, the legendary wealthy Maecenas. In addition to translations of all the Epodes and Odes, West provides a fine introduction to the man, to his works, and to the world of Rome under Augustus. Together with over 60 pages of notes, this is a worthy addition to almost anyone's library of treasured books. For the price, it is a splendid value although one that could have been enhanced by providing the Latin for each poem. There can be debate about this. As West remarks, "Translation of poetry is impossible but translations of Horace's odes is inconceivable...What is offered here...enable non-Latin readers to gain some understanding of the detail of the poetry and how it works, and to do so in English which can be read without revulsion." He certainly does that; indeed the poems can be read aloud with great pleasure with or without the wine and roses, though better still with a friend inclined to rejoicing under a plane tree with a cask laid down and sealed with Horace's own hands. And true, one rarely (for example in Helen Waddell's translations of some of the medieval lyrics of the wandering scholars or Robin Flower's luminous translation of "Pangur Ban") can achieve a translation close to the original. So---the argument can run---why add to the price or bother with printing the odes themselves.Yet, even without mastery of Latin, the loveliness and complexity of the meters can be appreciated, adding still further to our love for this lovely and complex man. Thus, this is a book for those who can subdue their yearning to apprehend, even a little and perhaps achieve even more, of both the Latin and the English...or led by West's translations, to get another book from Amazon which includes the Latin.

I appreciate the translation, Intro., full supply of notes, and glossary, as well as Chronology and biography of Horace.Excellent edition!

A wonderful translation!

Enjoyed this book, it was not too difficult to read, it is an excellent copy. I would recommend this book to everyone.

Unfortunately this book contains some inaccuracies which detracted from my third grader's confidence in the writing. For instance "Amphibians are the only animals that go through metamorphosis." not only appears as a sentence in this book but is strangely also bold and underlined. Other errors are less glaring such as "lichens are a type of fungus" (they are a composite organism which would have been a great topic to touch upon in a book on classification). It is too bad that the writing or editing was not more careful because other than these issues the organization of the information is nicely done and the plentiful photos and bright colors throughout make a nice introduction to classification for a 2nd-4th grader.

Used this for our homeschool science, it was an easy tool and great graphics. It broke down the classifications well for my 8 year old and discussed different types of animals.

My eight year old loves this book. It gives enough information to be useful and interesting, without becoming overwhelming or boring. The graphics are engaging and colorful. Great resource!

This is a good book for teaching elementary children. My only criticism is that it has too much about evolution, and parents of most Christian children, most homeschooled children, do not believe in evolution. I just X'd out that page. The pictures and diagrams are good.

very helpful for kids and older adults

Robert Green "Bob" Ingersoll (1833-1899) was a Civil War veteran, American political leader, and orator known as 'The Great Agnostic.' His collected speeches (e.g., Complete Lectures of Robert G. Ingersoll) are one of the genuine "treasures" of freethought literature. He states, “Like the most of you, I was raised among people who knew—who were certain. They did not reason or investigate. They had no doubts…. In their creed there was no guess---no perhaps. They had a revelation from God… They knew the origin, the cause of evil, of all crime, of all disease and death. They not only knew the beginning, but they knew the end. That knew that life had one path and one road… They knew that God was doing his best to make you take the path and that the Devil used every art to keep you in the road.” (Pg. 2-3)He notes, “I heard hundreds of these evangelical sermons---heard hundreds of the most fearful and vivid descriptions of the tortures inflicted in hell, of the horrible state of the lost. I supposed that what I heard was true and yet I did not believe it. I said, ‘It is,’ and then I thought, ‘It cannot be.’ … One Sunday I went with my brother to hear a Free Will Baptist preacher… he was an orator. He could paint a picture with words… For the first time I understood the dogma of eternal pain---appreciated ‘the glad tidings of great joy.’ For the first time my imagination grasped the height and depth of the Christian horror. Then I said, ‘It is a lie, and I hate your religion. If it is true, then I hate your God.’” (Pg. 9-11)He continues, “The orthodox God… told his disciples not to resist evil, to love their enemies… and yet we are told that this same God…uttered these heartless, these fiendish words: ‘Depart ye cursed into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels.’ These are the words of ‘eternal love.’ No human being has imagination enough to conceive of this infinite horror.” (Pg. 13)He explains, “I compared what was really known about the stars with the account of creation as told in Genesis. I found that the writer of the inspired book had no knowledge of astronomy… Does any one imagine that the author of Genesis knew anything about the sun—its size?... or that he knew anything of the clusters of stars so far away that their light, now visiting our eyes, has been traveling for two million years?... Yet millions of people insist that the writer of Genesis was inspired by the Creator of all worlds… The story is inconsistent with all known facts… I admit that this unknown writer was sincere… that he did the best he could. He did not claim to be inspired---did not pretend that the story had been told to him by Jehovah. He simply stated the ‘facts’ as he understood them.” (Pg. 21-22)He continues, “ I gave up the Old Testament on account of its mistakes, its absurdities, its ignorance and its cruelty. I gave up the New because it vouched for the truth of the Old. I gave it up on account of its miracles, its contradictions, because Christ and his disciples believe in the existence of devils---talked and made bargains with them, expelled them from people and animals.” (Pg. 25)He summarizes, “The sacred books of all the world are worthless dross and common stones compared with Shakespeare’s glittering gold and gleaming gems.” (Pg. 29)He asserts, “Matter and force were not created. They have existed from eternity. They cannot be destroyed. There was, there is, no creator. Then came the question, Is there a God? Is there a being of infinite intelligence, power and goodness, who governs the world?... it seems to me that perfect intelligence and perfect goodness must go together… To me it seems infinitely cruel for life to feed on life---to create animals that devour others… Everywhere the strong living on the weak---the superior on the inferior… Murder was universal. Everywhere, pain, disease, and death… Death that takes the mother from her helpless, dimpled child---death that fills the world with grief and tears. How can the orthodox Christian explain these things?” (Pg. 41-42)He continues, “What do we think of a man who will not, when he has the power protect his friends? Yet the Christian’s God allowed his enemies to torture and burn his friends, his worshipers. Who has ingenuity enough to explain this?... If God governs the world, why is innocence not a perfect shield? Why does injustice triumph? Who can answer these questions? In answer, the intelligent, honest man must say: I do not know.” (Pg. 43-44)He summarizes, “I do not deny. I do not know---but I do not believe. I believe that the natural is supreme---that from the infinite chain no link can be lost or broken---that there is no supernatural power that can answer prayer---no power that worship can persuade or change---no power that cares for man… Is there a God? I do not know. Is man immortal? I do not know. One thing I do know, and that is, that neither hope, nor fear, belief, nor denial, can change the fact. It is as it is, and it will be as it must be. We wait and hope.” (Pg. 47-48)He concludes, “Let us be true to ourselves---true to the facts we know, and let us, above all things, preserve the veracity of our souls. If there be gods we cannot help them, but we can assist our fellow-men. We cannot love the inconceivable, but we can love wife and child and friend. We can be as honest as we are ignorant. If we are, when asked what is beyond the horizon of the known, we must say that we do not know. We can tell the truth, and enjoy the blessed freedom that the brave have won. We can destroy the monsters of superstition, the hissing snakes of ignorance and fear… We can flood our years with sunshine---with the divine climate of kindness, and we can drain to the last drop the golden cup of joy.” (Pg. 50)This lecture will be of great interest to Freethinkers, Skeptics, Agnostics and Atheists.

Again, really great thinker and reasoner. To me, he ranks right up there with great thinkers of Greece and Rome.

Directly to the point. No wishy washy back and forth philosophy. Ingersoll is making no excuses for his radical views considering when this was written. Very refreshing point of view!

Well written - very clear and non agressive.

good read.

Amazing that this was written in the 1800's.

This is a very well written explanation of a truly great man's reasoning for being an Agnostic. Very engaging!Mike Smith.

Great!

I am nearly finished reading Trading in the Zone by Douglas (a great book). I bought all of these from Amazon.com based on the reviews I have read here. I have learned much from all of these books and recommend all of them without reservation."The Way of the Warrior-Trader", however, is definitely unique. And I don't mean that it is simply an interesting novelty, it is much, much deeper than that. This book transcends trading and yet, at the same time, I think it is a more pertinent book for most traders than all of the above (in my opinion Trading in the Zone is equal to this book for traders, but it has a narrower focus). The other books tell you how others succeeded, but this book prepares YOU to enter the fray with the proper motivation and battlefield psychology.PLEASE don't think this is just another mushy self-help, positive thinking book. Far from it, this is a reality-based, purpose-driven book that prepares you for the dangers and potential rewards that lie ahead. He eschews the typical shallow and covetous motivational approach, and takes a much deeper and much more effective "way". One that will not sound like every other "Retire rich in 3 years!!" book that you will forget 30 seconds after you finish the book. This book is about more than trading, it is about risk-taking in general, be it financial, personal, physical, emotional, etc. If you have a dangerous or challenging job or are facing a challenging situation in life, I would not hesitate for a second to recommend this book. It is really that good. Just the "A" in "A.CT.I.O.N." alone has changed my entire approach and outlook to trading and others issues in my life. Very similar to Trading in the Zone, but from another angle. This book does not appeal to your longing for riches or "lottery ticket" dreams, rather, it appeals to human issues that are much deeper and more enduring. You will find yourself motivated on a different and higher level, and this new motivation will be of a more permanent nature. I am what many of you would call a fundamentalist, right-wing, Bible-thumping Christian, yet, I was able to pass by some of McCall's Eastern religious views because I was moved by his message and his encouraging approach. Very much the approach of a kind and attentive instructor gently leading his pupils to a new way. Irrespective of my ultimate success or failure as a trader, I have gained much from this book that I can use in many other areas of my life. I highly recommend it.

This is a great book! Despite of some comments i read here. As many other reviewers here i read a lot of similar books listed, but none of them strike the brain as this one. If u pursue a success in trading u have to grow in other areas as well. U can not concentrate on trading only, because other problems u have in life will find a way to surface in your trading business. This book does exactly that, gives you prospective of the right way to deal with all issues u might come up in your life. I highly recommend it!

This was one of those "relate something else to trading" books. Was recommended to me as a "book that changed my life". Ok. While it did not change my life, it was a useful book. There are a lot more connections between trading and Samauri than you would initially think. The author is a trader, martial artist, and samurai groupie, so he combined all those topics into a book. There are no trading techniques in this book, the main focus is on trading mindset, preparation, and dedication to your task at hand. There are plenty of interesting stories in each chapter that relate to samurai and those stories can relate to trading and trading mindset.Chapters include topics such as motivation, self perception, acceptance, centering, trust and intuition, imagery, fear management, commitment, resiience, etc...If you trade your own account or think you may in the future, this book should be added to your list of required reading.

High in philosophy. I am glad I read it. Every little bit helps to give you an edge.

There are so many great books on trading and psychology affects. This is not one of them. I have read many trading books and if you are trying to get some clarity there are much better books to help you out. Look at my other reviews. This book is a philosophy book that happens to be written by someone who trades. It may add value to your life or may not but if your time is valuable, make sure you know what you are getting into here.
