Review

"The current edition is not a rewrite of Rahlfs' text, but new textual discoveries have come to light and there have been significant changes in the science of textual criticism since Rahlfs first compiled his edition. . . . The revision of Hanhart . . . includes (1) removing errors and misprints; (2) making several cosmetic changes to the text concerning accentuation, a correction to a perfect participle in Isa 5.17, and a conjectural emmandation in Isa 53.2; and (3) concerning the critical apparatus Hanhart eliminates several mistakes arising from comparison with the Gottingen edition, corrections to misleading simplifications of the textual transmission, and the inclusion of the uncials Q, C, and V and the recensions O and L with variants where Rahlfs only mentioned B, S, or A."This revised 'pocket-edition' (I use that term very loosely given its size and weight) remains true to Rahlfs' purpose: 'The aim of this work is to provide ministers and students with a reliable edition of the Septuagint at a moderate price, and thus to supply an important companion and aid to the study not only of the Old Testament, but also of the New Testament'. While Rahlfs' text is available in electronic form. . . there is still no substitute for having a good and updated critical apparatus as well. Those serious about biblical study or are interested in how the NT interprets the OT, should consider getting one."-- euangelizomai.blogspot.com/2007/05/review-of-new-edition-of-rahfls"Rahlfs (1865-1935) published in 1935 the two-volume critical standard edition of the Septuagint. The present edition represents a revision, though a minimalist one. largely restricted to correcting and improving the readability of the critical apparatus. The revisions have been made by Robert Hanhart, a noted expert on the Septuagint; see R. Hanhart in VT 55, 2005, 450-460. This most welcome edition is designed to place the Greek text of the OT into the hands of all those who wish to work critically with the now proliferating vernacular translations of the Septuagint in English, French, and German.- Highly recommended as a basic tool for biblical research."--International Review of Biblical Studies

As far as actually reviewing this version of the Septuagint (LXX), there isn't much more I can say than what the last reviewer mentioned. This volume is eminently readable due to the clear font and font size, it is portable, and it is the best available version of the LXX at this time (the Goettingen Septuagint, which is composed of more-recent [than Rahlfs] critical editions of most books in the LXX and is preferred by most scholars, is not readily available outside of the academic world).I became interested in reading the LXX after mastering enough Koine Greek to be able to read the Greek New Testament (GNT). It took me only a few verses to realize that there are many more vocabulary words in the Septuagint than in the GNT. As this is the case, I recommend Lust, Eynikel, and Hauspie's "Greek-English Lexicon of the Septuagint" (available on Amazon). There are few LXX tools available at the moment, and this lexicon covers every word in the LXX; Muraoka's lexicon, for instance, only covers the Pentateuch and the Prophets. This lexicon is not to the LXX what BDAG is to the GNT, but it is the best there is right now.The LXX has a mix of classical Greek, Semitisms, and (mostly) Koine Greek that makes it a more difficult read than the GNT. The versification is also different in some of the books than in English translations of the Bible (most of which are based on the Hebrew Masoretic Text [MT], which differs from the Septuagint in the just-mentioned instances). Karen Jobes and Moises Silva have written an excellent volume, titled "Invitation to the Septuagint" (also available on Amazon), that anyone should read before actually attempting to read the LXX itself. In addition, they supply a helpful appendix that gives the differences in versification between the LXX and English translations; the version of the LXX they use is Rahlfs' edition, which is why I mention the book here.I believe the Septuagint receives short shrift in biblical studies circles. The usual assertion is that it is likely to be less reliable than the Hebrew text because there are so many different versions that were written and revised by so many different people (Jobes and Silva discuss the multiple texts of the LXX). However, the Dead Sea Scrolls (DSS) have shown that the Septuagint may actually be more reliable than people previously thought, since many passages in the DSS agree with the Septuagint over the Masoretic Text (that is, in cases where there is a discrepancy); it appears to be obvious that the Hebrew text underwent some changes as well before it was standardized into the Masoretic Text (although Jobes and Silva provide useful and necessary information about the dangers inherent in trying to use the LXX for textual criticism of the MT). If you are interested in this line of study, I recommend purchasing a copy of the "The Dead Sea Scrolls Bible" by Martin G. Abegg et al. (again, available on Amazon) and comparing passages from the DSS, the LXX, and a Masoretic-Text based English translation (or, better yet, the Masoretic Text itself, if you also read Hebrew).Additionally, there is a group in Oregon that completed a new interlinear translation of the Greek Bible in 2006 that includes both the LXX and the GNT. Their "Apostolic Bible" includes both a Lexical Concordance and an English-Greek Index, which are invaluable tools for study of the LXX (they are currently working on an Analytical Lexicon, which also will be immensely useful since Bernard Taylor's "Analtyical Lexicon to the Septuagint" is no longer in print). This work does have two unfortunate shortcomings: 1) The LXX is missing the apocryphal books, and 2) They translated both the Old and New Testaments from the Complutensian Polyglot (rather than using Rahlfs' edition for the LXX and NA27/UBS4 for the GNT; the Complutensian Polyglot, like the Textus Receptus, contains many erroneous readings in the NT). Their volume (which is also available on disc) is only available on their website (sorry, Amazon, but I'm trying to help folks out here), which can easily be found through any internet search engine.Other books which may be of varying degrees of usefulness are: 1) "Concordance to the Septuagint Versions of the O.T. (including the Apocryphal Books)" by Edwin Hatch and Henry Redpath (this concordance is in Greek only, so it is meant for those who are fully versed in the language); 2) "Grammar of the Septuagint Greek with Selected Readings from the Septuagint" by F.C. Conybeare and St. George Stock (see my review on Amazon); and 3) the newly-released "A New English Translation of the Septuagint" edited by Albert Pietersma and Benjamin G. Wright (see my review on Amazon). Of course, there is also the older "Septuagint with Apocrypha: Greek and English" by Sir Lancelot C.L. Brenton to help the reader who wants/needs an English translation alongside the Greek text. There are additional books available that look at the history of the Septuagint and its use by both Jews and Christians, but there is a still a dearth of study resources on the LXX at this time (unless you are a professional scholar and have access to all of the scholarly literature); however, there are some helpful websites that are available to all. Again, internet search engines will enable you to locate such sites. I hope that both LXX websites and this review will be of help to those interested in studying the Old Testament in Greek.

The Rahlf-Hanhart Septuagint is a semi critical edition. It is largely based on Alexandrinus (A), Vaticanus (B), and Sinaiticus (S). It is not identical to what scholars call the "Old Greek" which were the first Greek translations of each book. Rather in most every book this volume presents ancient revisions towards what is called proto-M, sometimes these are Hexaplaric or Kaige recensions. For the Old Greek one must look to the pricey Gottingen Editions or piece it together themselves from the Cambridge editions of Brooke and McLean (now in public domain). So why buy this volume? Because you want to read the Old Testament in Greek in a way which a 4th+ century christian would have encountered it, and read it in an actual book (text is free online with publisher at academic-bible.com or get an official pdf free from SBL) Because you want to know what the Vaticanus text of Judges or the Theodotian text of Daniel reads. Or you really need the critical apparatus. Because You purchased NETS and want a Greek Old Testament so you can read along when Rahlfs is used as the base text.

It has been fascinating to see how the LXX translates and interprets the Hebrew Bible. I only see value in having this as a second opinion regarding the OT. I wonder if greater familiarity with the LXX would assist the church’s understanding of its heritage.

This is easily the best scholar's edition of the Septuagint around. When looking for Bibles in ancient languages, make sure to get something from the Bibelgesellschaft. It includes the entire Septuagint (including the Apocrypha), and when there are two versions it splits the page between them so that you can compare them easily. It has an excellent critical apparatus so that you can compare different manuscripts and the other ancient versions, and has a key to help you understand it. It's the revised up-to-date edition. Although it's published in Germany, it's made so that anyone can use it so its introduction and preface are in several languages (Greek, English, German, Latin, etc.). The Greek font is also well laid out and easy to read.

The best scholarship in a convenient and compact form.

Splurged on this for myself for Christmas 2018. Beautiful, and I love that it matches my Greek New Testament. :)

Good price. Everything as described.

The best version of the OT to have if you can read Greek. Like the translation better than English versions. The book seems well made and I expect it will last for years.

This delightful coming of age memoir reminds me, in an odd sort of way, of the Oscar winning movie, "Lady Bird."The subject may be baseball and the person going to the Hall of Fame may not be an artist, but this is a story about growing up, learning from your mistakes, and being able to laugh about it in adulthood. Most athletic autobiographies are nothing but thinly disguised blueprints to pick up lucrative speaking engagements to the "inspirational" sales crowd.Chipper Jones, on the other hand, turned down money to complete his career with the Atlanta Braves. His hardscrabble years in rural Florida, his crying wish to go home after a semester at a difficult private school, his hazing in the minor leagues as the Braves Golden Boy and Number 1 pick, and his leadership of the Braves to their World Series Title in 1995 and almost two decades of division winning baseball is inspiring reading.[Hansen Alexander's latest book, an Amazon exclusive, is a biography of Roger Clemens, ONE BRAVE MAN.]

I've read most of the books written about the Braves teams of the 1990s and early 2000s, and this is easily my favorite. Chipper is brutally honest about himself and his feelings on any number of issues (including teammates and rivals). This book actually has insights that surprised me, such as Bobby Cox quitting in 2008 because he couldn't stand working with Frank Wren (they talked him out of it). There is some locker room adult language in the book, so if you're put off by that I'd recommend Of Mikes and Men: A Lifetime of Braves Baseball. Other than that, this book is an easy and very interesting read.

I totally enjoyed this book. My younger daughter and I went to so many Braves' games during these years , Spring Training games, the last game in the old Fulton County Stadium and the first game at the "TED". Reading Chipper's book was like hearing from an old friend and reliving a lot of very precious memories since I lost my daughter five years ago to cancer. Anyone who loves baseball would enjoy this book. But, if you are an Atlanta Braves fan, your library is not complete without it.

Chipper Jones was born to play baseball. Based on his remarkable career he received the highest recognition the sport has to offer as an elected Hall of Fame player. Importantly, the narrative lets Chipper say how it was from his perspective. He made some poor decisions, yet he offers his point of view willingly. He also expressed regrets and gives several apologies. In an era marred by steroid use Chipper played honest, and his achievements all came the right way with hard work. As a rare one club player he was the longest serving part of a very special Atlanta Braves dynasty.Nicholas R.W. Henning - Australian Baseball Author

Somehow reads exactly as you would expect Chipper to talk and act. Full of cockiness and bravado, but also just enough self deprecation to keep it bearable. So many good stories and insights on his career and fellow players. The stuff on the big 3 pitchers is worth the purchase alone. His youth and minor league recollections were surprisingly highly interesting and a major plus. As for the personal life stuff, I thought it was not really all that exciting, but I suppose he would have gotten a lot of flack had he left the soap opera stuff out. I am a huge braves fan and thought the world of chipper on the field and in his interviews, and this book is a great and highly entertaining telling of a great career. Golden if you love the Braves, but I am certain any baseball fan would enjoy, including Mets fans!

This is surprisingly well-written. I never read an autobiography so quickly, nor could I put it down once I started. I'm not sure if that's due to the fact that I remember growing up and paying attention to everything Chipper was talking about or if it was due to his straight-forward, keep-it-real approach (I'm sure it was both). Most autobiographies come off as too self-righteous or they reminisce almost exclusively on the "glory days" (which is standard and to be expected with autobiographies), but most fail to even touch-on the not-so-glorious moments - let alone go into detail about them with any sense of self-accountability. Chipper does this and does it well. In a time when ego and self-righteousness seems dictate the behaviors and actions of one's own character, Chipper's acknowledgement of his personal failures and willingness to hold himself accountable is refreshing.

This was an excellent book that I could not put down. You don't have to be a Braves fan or even a Chipper fan to enjoy this book. It was well written and really gives good insight on what it was like for Chipper growing up as a elite young prospect, going through the draft process and realizing his dream of playing professional baseball. He doesn't sugarcoat anything and owns up to his mistakes in his personal life which I admired. I especially enjoyed his stories of his fellow teammates and what it was like playing and goofing around with Maddux, Glavine, Smoltz and Bobby Cox among others. A must read for baseball fans and a great biography!

I've lived in Atlanta for 37 years. I remember hearing about Chipper Jones when he was drafted and then waiting for him to clear the minor league system. He was worth the wait. His personal troubles aside, he played the game the right way. The team winning was always his focus. Thanks for a great 19 years and for a nice read on a warm summer day.

Review

“As the marriage faltered, the masks fell away…Plath wrote honestly of her unhappiness and fear…In 14 recently uncovered letters to the psychiatrist who’d treated her since her suicide attempt in college, we see Plath at her most vulnerable. It feels almost taboo to read these, so unabashed is her pain and humiliation…But in her final letters there was a note of wild, almost unbearable optimism. Inspiration ran like a tap; poems were pouring out of her. It seemed impossible that she would not make it.” (Parul Sehgal, New York Times)“The Plath we initially encounter in these letters seems very far from the person who, just a few years earlier, had attempted suicide with her mother’s sleeping pills; and perhaps even farther from the person who, a few years later, gassed herself in her London kitchen. Above all, we see Plath on the move… She comes off, most often, as a whirlwind… it’s the alertness to daily life that makes Plath’s letters most poignant. Few writers have been as intensely attentive to quotidian details as Plath was, or understood so intuitively what to preserve in their art. A detail appears, uneventful on its face, first in a journal or a drawing, then in a letter, sometimes more than one. Her mind was brilliantly off-kilter, its emphasis falling in surprising places.” (The New Yorker)“Here is the more or less abrupt shedding, in extremis, of the “stiff,” “artificial” voice that infected her early poems and stories and from which she had been working to free herself for many years. The book provides, in the end, an account of an ordinary anguish out of which Plath produced something extraordinary.” (Harper's Magazine)“An exemplary edition offering a textured portrait of an iconic poet.” (Kirkus Reviews (starred review))“This set of letters is a dazzling literary achievement, capturing the tender beauty of Plath’s richly lived, too short life.” (Publishers Weekly (starred review))“A shattering chronicle of a woman’s struggle to be both a pathbreaking artist and a domestic paragon…Together, these two volumes accentuate the wonder of all that Plath accomplished by age 30, and her poetry, fiction, journals, and letters will remain forever alive, daring, urgent, and electrifying.” (Booklist, Starred Review)“In Plath’s appeals to Beuscher she is plainly desperate for help, yet the rhythms of her sentences, her bitter humor, and the flamboyant performance of her plight reveal the artist at work as much as the woman in pain.” (Emily Cooke, BookForum)

Sylvia Plath (1932–1963) was one of the writers who defined the course of twentieth-century poetry. Her vivid, daring, and complex work continues to captivate new generations of readers and writers. In The Letters of Sylvia Plath Volume 2, 1956–1963, we discover the art of Plath’s correspondence. Most of these materials have never before been published, and are presented here unabridged, without revision—so that she can speak directly in her own words. Refreshingly candid and offering intimate details of her personal life, Plath’s letters are playful, too, entertaining a wide range of addressees, including family, friends, and professional contacts, with inimitable wit and verve. The letters document Plath’s extraordinary literary development and the genesis of many poems, short and long fiction, and journalism. While her endeavors to publish in a variety of genres had mixed receptions, she was never dissuaded. Through acceptance and rejection of her work, Plath strove to stay true to her creative vision. Well-read and curious, she simultaneously offers a fascinating commentary on contemporary culture.Peter K. Steinberg, leading Plath scholar, and Karen V. Kukil, editor of The Journals of Sylvia Plath, 1950–1962, provide comprehensive footnotes and an extensive index informed by their meticulous research. Alongside a selection of photographs and Plath’s own drawings, they masterfully contextualize what the pages disclose. This selection of later correspondence details Plath and her husband, Ted Hughes, becoming major influential contemporary writers, as it happened. Her recorded experiences include early publications; teaching, committing to writing full time, and making professional acquaintances; traveling, settling in England, building a family, and buying a house; and, through a series of letters to her psychiatrist, previously unknown insight into the breakup of her marriage. Throughout, Plath’s voice is completely, uniquely her own.

So, first off -- Plath's letters should have been published in one volume. There's no separating the wheat from the chaff here, no tough editorial decisions -- you get every scrip and scrap she wrote, obsessively footnoted, whether it is of any literary interest or not. Ted Hughes lived till his 60s, and Faber managed to publish a superbly edited doorstop-sized SINGLE volume of his letters! They should have done the same for Plath.Putting that aside -- I'm next expecting a Sylvia Plath cookbook to come out! There are at least two recipes included in these letters, as well as numerous ideas for meal plans -- not to mention housekeeping and gardening tips, some home remedies, and ways to organize your schedule to work from home! No complaints here -- reading an author's letters immerses you in their daily life. In Plath's case, you get that in spades. I'm simply astonished at how incredibly energetic and capable she was across all fronts. And you can bet I'm going to try the recipes!Until the devastating end, negativity is rarely in evidence. Readers of her Letters Home will be familiar with this -- she was consistently positive, and this was not a false front. Yes, she struggled -- but her life WAS amazing and good, and she did glory in her family and friends, her writing, and the beauty of nature and art. The only ambiguous relationships worth noting in the letters -- and no surprise if you know anything about Plath -- are with her mother, her sister-in-law Olwyn Hughes, and with the poet W.S. Merwin and his wife Dido.As Plath's daughter makes clear in the foreword, the real story here is the revelation of her letters to her psychiatrist in the last months of her life. Like most fans of Plath, I'd previously read quotes from her letters written during that time -- and the biographer Diane Middlebrook summed it up best when she talks about fantasies of rescuing Sylvia Plath. Her suicide was nothing like that of her fellow poets Anne Sexton or John Berryman -- she was much younger, was struggling with depression but not with more severe forms of mental illness, and was at the height of her poetic powers. These letters make clear what a perfect storm it was -- literally, a storm, when faced with a horrific English winter -- plus no phone, no hospital bed, and especially no nanny to help with the kids. With Plath's journals from the end of her life missing, I often wondered about her real state of mind. Yes, there are clearly exaggerations in these letters, which leave the reader wondering what really happened. But mostly, I was floored by how clearly she saw the truth. Reading the letters to her psychiatrist, I kept in mind that Ted Hughes never saw these letters -- nor would his widow Carol have seen them, unless she's read them now that they are published. Plath knew that she was seeing the real Hughes at last -- the serial adulterer, bound to proving his freedom, even as he loves his wife at home -- and this is the man he remained for the rest of his life. She also realized that she couldn't be the "sweet homebase" of a country wife "to take him back refreshed", as he requires -- the very homebase that he had in his second wife Carol Hughes, his widow who still lives in Plath's beloved Court Green. But most devastatingly of all, she knew exactly what she had to do for her own mental health and was desperately trying to get the help she needed. Once she faced the worst, she ran on adrenaline until she got into that damn flat of poet W.B. Yeats in London, when a sinister destiny seemed to conspire to bring her to her knees in front of a gas oven. The act that she is most famous for. O we are superstitious, as Plath says -- but I can't think anything else, after reading these letters. I've been reading Plath -- and reading about Plath -- for many years. But nothing has affected me like reading her last letter, a week before her suicide. Each reader will have their own reaction, based on who they are. I'm Eastern Orthodox and see much intense -- even desperate -- spiritual woundedness and spiritual longing in Plath's work and in her letters. May God have mercy on us all.

I first scanned through this whole book, then read it through carefully. I love seeing the actual handwritten letters reproduced in the sections within the book, as it is extraordinarily helpful to see handwriting as a reflection of the personality of the writer. My major thought about things nearly 60 years ago, is that communications back then with letters were slower, yet more in depth. Today someone so unhappy would be texting and calling and hopefully reaching out for more help. I think Sylvia felt very isolated at the end.

I was surprised at how much I enjoyed reading these letters. I miss the days, not so long ago, when people would write long letters to one another as a primary mode of communication with distant family or friends. Although this volume does offer an overview of Plath's life and a chronology in the introductory pages, it was certainly helpful to be already mostly familiar with her biography and her poetry. The letters filled in some missing pieces in Sylvia's own voice-- preserved in the moment when events were unfolding. The last minute addition of the letters to her American psychiatrist were a wise decision—a choice made by her daughter, who offers opening remarks that were meaningful as well. The letters to the psychiatrist allow a more authentic and uncensored voice to emerge. Even though she would occasionally tell the same news to more than one recipient of her letters, I am glad the whole collection was given to us and did not find the repetition bothersome—there would be a few different details in each. It would have been helpful if we knew the location of the recipient, that is, where the letter was mailed to, instead of having to figure that out from clues. I was pleased to learn that Plath believed that she was writing poetry for those who would benefit from her honest and bold expression. She did not want to write happy verse where, as she states it, "birds go tweet, tweet." As someone who has experienced at least one episode of severe depression, I found comfort reading her poetry at the time I was struggling—she has the gift to describe what the experience of despair is like, and she had the courage to state it outright in her amazing language. Thank you, Sylvia! Finally, it was a moving experience to come to the last letter of the book and turn the page to hear her voice no more—I almost wished there were an epilogue, but the abrupt silence fits the sudden loss of this magnificent poet and remarkable woman. It must have been a huge project for the editors of this collection to prepare all these pages—I am grateful for their attention to details. I have not read volume one, so I cannot comment on that. I was able to close this book with a more complete understanding of the events of her life during this period and the possible and various elements that led to her suicide. Now I plan to return to the poems again and will look forward to reading some literary criticism. As an added bonus, there are some photographs of Plath and pictures of a few letters and other documents—some of these in color. Overall, a quality hardbound book and the font is large enough to read easily.

Love this book! I have times when I cannot get enough of Sylvia and reading her letters is always fascinating. She can make mundane tasks so interesting. This book is a true gem.

Plath is obsessive about herself. Perhaps this is what it takes to write the poetry she did. Whether this is true is a question. The two volumes of her letters enable us to ponder an answer. And the ghost of suicide haunts throughout.

My daughter-in-law asked for these books for Christmas. She likes this author. She is pleased with it.
