I just finished this book today and came here to express how much I loved it! But I must confess I'm a little puzzled by all the negative/lackluster reviews. I'm glad I didn't read them before I bought and read the story.Wrought with impossible choices, sacrifice, and passionate love, the relationship between Kit and Anna was breathtaking and exciting. Set that against the unforgiving backdrop of a volatile Afghanistan, and you have an epic historical romance with as much relevance today as it had in it's fictional time period.I was fascinated with the culture and people even as I was slightly appalled. Akbar Kahn was a worthy villain with understandable motivation. Even if he wasn't relatable, he was likable. Just as the title implies, Bold Destiny is an exceptional period piece that has forgone the general romantic Regency charm for higher stakes, greater suffering, and a more powerful love. This story deserves it's ranking up there with some of the best of it's kind. For fans of Laura Kinsale, I would highly recommend. (less)

I LOVED this book. Interwoven with the true history of the awful defeat of the British in Afghanistan at Kabul was a poignant love story between a world-weary, cynical British officer and an Englishwoman who had been captured by the Afghans as a child and raised to be one of the Afghan chieftain's concubines.I loved how complex the characters were. There was no black and white here. Even Akbar Khan, the Afghan, was a fascinating man. Raised in the culture of hate and ferocity, Jane Feather managed to make him sympathetic in a way. I was left guessing whether--in his own barbaric way--he really loved Annabel. And Kit was wonderful: he was the typical reluctant, dissolute officer who despised his clueless superiors, but when called upon to fight, he was a fearless, natural leader, inspiring his dispirited men into suicidal battle. And Annabel was the mysterious and beautiful woman who was clever enough to inspire both men into the final confrontation which would decide all their destiny. The love story was stormy but sweet and the ending was unexpected.Jane Feather is a superb writer. I loved the way she structured the narrative to seamlessly weave back and forth between the protagonists, and I loved the history and background of the British war with the "infidels". It did remind me of what we are currently facing in our world today.I would highly recommend this book--I could not put it down. Her writing is

I generally like Jane Feather's books, but this one was hard to read. It was about the failed British occupation of Afghanistan, and things just kept going from bad to worse and then to much, much worse. The British were attacked, then they were starving, then they were freezing, then they were traveling through the mountains in the middle of winter, then they were ambushed, and corpses were piling up on all sides of them, then they were prisoners facing execution, and so on. It just kept getting worse and worse. It was not in any way a cheerful story. And all the white people were really, really stupid. All of them. Even the hero, Kit, had his stupid moments. Akbar Khan was never stupid. He was sly and cunning and ruthless. I almost wish the story was about him instead of Kit and Annabell. Akbar Khan was cool, and deserved a love story of his own. But that's not what this book was about. There was a happy ending, which happened in about the last 10 pages, but you had to go through a lot of pain to get there. This is not a book I would like to revisit. Three stars because the book was well-researched and well-written, but no more than that because it was painful to read. And one more thing -- the cover art is REALLY bad. Annabelle never wore western clothes, ever. She was often dirty and ragged, and wore leather trousers, or a burka, but never a white silk dress with bows and lacy garters. Didn't anybody read the book before they chose the cover art? The disconnect between the book and the cover is completely ridiculous.
