This author takes us on an epic adventure from one end of a continent to the other - several times. This story follows a war - ravaged people who were fractured, and clearly must ban together if they want to survive.Maxwell has built characters I quickly came to care about, and built a world that is interesting in its detail. A great deal of the series - and especially of this final installment - is embroiled in grisly battle. These battles are fought with swords and bows, and with magically-powered devices. The violence of war is a prime theme here, so if you don't care for that, this may not be your cup of tea. There are a lot of personal struggles, friendship, romance, and a coming of age. I definitely recommend the Everman series.
This is a descent series. I'm getting a bit tired of the young female heroine who ends up being the key to saving the world torn between 2 men trend. Good story line but too much focus on characters who aren't worth investing in. Battle scenes drag out FOREVER and I found myself skimming over large sections pretty frequently. Amber is a pretty low importance level character and i lost track of how many times that girl finds herself kidnapped or held captive. It got to be laughable. I liked Ella but the whole killian/ilathor love triangle was so cliche. It's obvious how it's going to end from the beginning. After writing this review I'm realizing I really could have gone either way on this series I guess. Def not a stay up till 2am on a work night series. I recommend Jeff Wheeler books. He had several series that will be worth your time.
I rarely find a series that ends in a way that is not just highly satisfactory but also complete. Often, or perhaps inevitably, many questions are left unanswered. I realize that many authors do this by design, leaving it up to the imagination of the reader and some authors simply don't write well enough to complete their stories. Not only did James Maxwell complete his story about the orphaned siblings and their struggles, he also neatly provided closure for the supporting characters.I love the depth he put into each person in this series both as they were introduced and then as their individual stories unfolded, each with a purpose. Maxwell brilliantly wove these tales into the main story as few authors have the talent to do. He is a master of his craft and I would read anything he writes. However, while I have no questions left unanswered, I do wish that Maxwell would have let us see Jerhal reunited with his wife in Hazara. The strong desert warrior deserves a good woman and I would've liked to read about them more. I also wish that we could've been privy to the meeting of Lady Alise and Ella for the first time. I know that Lady Alise approved but it would've been fun to see the interaction between the two women in Killian's life.Overall, I enjoyed this series more than anything I've read in a long time. I look forward to reading more by James Maxwell in the not-to-distant future...like tonight.
This series was exceptional. On a structural note, the writting was clear and immediate with proper punctuation - thank you! The depth of character development, with new people added as the series went along, gave readers insights into emerging friends and enemies. The characters had strengths as well as weaknesses making them feel accessible, not just untouchably heroic. New lands, changes in the political landscape, ingenious last second saves when all seemed lost...this series is one of only a few that I can be sure will stay with me always.
Oh WOW, what a series. From the first book to the last I was on the edge of my chair. I was so tied up with each character that when something went wrong I'd cry or mourn when someone died .... noooo not him/her no they can't die they're a main character.... the end was awesome and had me in tears of sadness and joy. The author draws the reader in with the first pages of each book and leaves you hanging at the end till you must pick up the next book. I'd suggest getting all the books at once so you don't have any waiting time between books. You'll pace the floor till the next book is delivered. Absolutely a must read series.
I am sad to say this is my least favorite in the Evermen Saga. There wasn't any surprises to how the story paid off. It felt like the obvious path was taken most often. Still I don't want to give the impression that I didn't like it. It is a competent ending to the series. I just felt it was okay instead of a slam dunk. The hardest part of the book was the middle. At this portion the book has many huge battles. The story really isn't progressing at this point. It is just battle description. The good guys are only defending. I just didn't feel very interested in hearing about defense. I want to have a plan going. I needed some mystery to keep me turning the page. There is still a lot to love about this conclusion. The way the author wraps up the story in the end is very satisfying. I found the closing chapters some of the best in the series. Also any chapter that has Ella or Miro as the narrator is great. They are very good characters that I have grown quite fond of.I don't know if James Maxwell plans to write anymore books in the Evermen saga. This series on a whole is very good. Whatever he writes I will read. Even though this book might not be his finest effort I remain a fan. I look forward to whatever adventures he has planned for us.
It would be hard not to root for these characters. This book wraps up so many of the story lines. It was fun discovering the turn of events that made each of these characters who they are. It you are a fan of alternate reality fiction, I would highly recommend the Evermen series. James Maxwell-THANK YOU. There are just enough clues and just enough twists to make this a really fun read.
