I was looking for an authentic japanese cookbook and this one is definitely authentic. The techniques section in this book makes it worth buying just for that. The only drawback is this book has very few if any recipes that are just vegetables, almost all of them has some kind of meat. Sure she uses tofu in some of the dishes but she usually includes some sort of meat in it too. I think now i'm going to have to buy her vegetarian book to balance this one out. I like the recipes just wish it was more balanced and more like real japanese home cooking which usually has very little meat in it.

This is my 3rd book from E.Andoh and I like the simplicity of her books. This book has no photos (old book) but very nice drawings to illustrate techniques.

I loved this cookbook so much I photocopied the entire (out of print) copy my library had several years ago, which cost me at least three times what I would've paid if I could've bought it new. I'm thrilled to find it used, and I can't recommend it highly enough. Everything I have made from this book over the last 10 or 12 years has been delicious (with the exception of a failed rice bran pickle experiment I forgot about when I went on vacation...whoops). Elizabeth Andoh is to Japanese cooking what Barbara Tropp was to Chinese; passionate, knowledgeable, down to earth, the kind of cook you wish was your neighbor.

Hands down, this is my FAVORITE Japanese cookbook. Elizabeth Andoh, an American married to a Japanese, is not only a fine cook, cooking teacher, and journalist in her own right, but is in the unique position of being an American consultant to the Japanese food industry. This is her first cookbook, published in 1980 (it was followed by "An American Taste of Japan" in 1985). It's a primer of "pure" Japanese home cooking -- like Mama used to make, if your mama happened to be Japanese. I learned to cook in the kitchens of Japanese friends, and the flavors of Ms. Andoh's recipes make me swooningly "natsukashii" (nostalgic) for Japan.The book's 130 recipes are organized in the classic order of Japanese cuisine: soups, rice, noodles, braised and simmered foods, grilled foods, deep-fried foods, steamed foods, mixed and sauced foods, pickles, and sweet things and beverages. No photographs, but crystal clear recipes are complemented by beautiful line drawings that illustrate ingredients and techniques. A section in the front details Japanese cooking techniques and equipment, while a glossary at the back not only translates the names of unusual ingredients, but explains how to choose and store them. In all, it's a wonderful book that I can't recommend highly enough.

While learning to cook for my Japanese husband, he was never quite satisfied with the Japanese dishes I tried to cook for him. That is, not until I started using the recipes in Ms Anodoh's book, At Home with Japanese Cooking. After that he never complained that the meals were "not like his mother used to make."

When I ordered I got confused as to which cover I'd be receiving, since there's two versions and it doesn't specify which is the paperback and which is the hardcover (I got the paperback). So hopefully the pictures will help clear it up! I haven't gotten the chance to read it yet, but I like the illustrations. The book is just thinner than I thought.

I bought this as a gift for my mom, who is an herbalist and has a wider ranging love for all things plants and their lifecycles and their history.This book is the perfect gift for any plant lover. The tidbits and facts and so very interesting and the vintage like illustrations are so beautiful!It's broken into categories for easy searching or looking up of your favorites, but its a great read from beginning to end as well

Getting interested in this subject, and I like the info in this book. Having just started in this study, I have this book and one other on the subject, and I have noticed some differences between them. But I know folklore can have some variance anyway. Still an interesting read.

No single book on the language or symbolism of flowers is complete or exhaustive. But this small little reproduction of an older book does a nice job of giving one a glimpse into the symbology of flowers.

I'm studying to become an herbalist and this is a great book to add to my library . I enjoy the art and the information given for each plant. I learned from this boom and I would recommend it to others.

I'm always interested in folklore and this book gives succinct info on the meaning and language of flowers. If you read Victorian fiction and/or poetry, this will give you added insight into the authors' intent.

My concentration for my major is ethnobotany, and this is a definite must-have addition to my collection! THe illustrations are wonderful! Each section done has at least one illustration and a good paragraph explaining its origins. I particularly enjoy the seasons section, as well as the chinese flower calendar and the japanese flower calendar. There is also a shortened "sentiments and symbolism" in the back, similar to a glossary, with basic meanings of every plant in the book. It is organized well, and very informative.

Such a wonderful book! Lovely images, great info. I thought I'd just flip through and read sections that interested me, but I ended up sitting down and reading it page for page.

Hard to follow, partially because the explanations were specific to the manufacturing industry and sometimes the logic was not as obvious to me as to the author. The excerpts from The Goal, however, were excellent and I plan to get that book. I found a reference to another book on Theory of Constraints called Tame the Flow: Hyper-Productive Knowledge-Work Management that I am going to get.

I am surprised how we can get away with going through college without some basic courses that cover toc and process engineering, regardless of the major. A critical topic I dare say

If you have not read any of this man's books you are seriously missing out. My husband had to read a couple of his books for an MBA class and he hates reading novels so he turned it over to me to give him the basic points of the book. The books were so good he even read them and so I bought this for him for christmas. You learn so much from these books; there's so much you can apply directly to your own workplace and life in general. So glad I bought this.

I bought the Kindle version of this book. I am sure this makes some good points, but I did only read about 30 percent into it. There were several spelling//wording/format errors. Because of this I am not sure if this was the reason I found it hard to follow, or if it was the way the book was written originally. I returned it for a refund.

Scarce book from Goldratt's wonderworld.

Its a little smart for my taste but on the second read it becomes much clearer as to what Goldratt is trying to depict. Its a great illustration of where to move resources in modern manufacturing today, and that your problems are not always what they seem.

This was my textbook for History of Modern art. Lots of pictures, easy to read and organized. I liked this book just fine, my professor disliked this book mostly because it didn't have much about women artists or West coast artists so she supplemented that.

Loved the book. Lots of contemporary artists. Easy to read. Great for school or for pleasure read if you are into contemporary art.

I got this for class. its a very good reference, and has a lot of information in it.

Very text heavy and uninformative. Full of author opinions, and uses black and white photos of original artworks, making it hard to analyze and appreciate fully.

I had my first copy of this when I was a young girl in the 70's! I knew then that it was the most accurate description of me/Sagittarius as soon as I read it. It's not full of fluff and random, commercialized. Miss Goodman has very good astrological research in there, but she makes it easy to understand, and tinges it with humor. I've always loved how it explains your sigh, and also shows you how you match up with each zodiac sign as far as love goes, for men and women.My beloved, dog-eared copy traveled with me throughout my years growing up and I've always recommended it and shared it with my friends. I've been using this book for more than twenty years, and just recently downloaded the Kindle version because the printed copy was so used that pages were beginning to fall out. As an author, I use it to help establish relationships - not only between a romantic couple but between siblings, employer/employee/coworkers, and others. It is a treasure trove of information about human beings, what makes them tick, and how they relate to various individuals. I don't know what I'd do without it!

I actually lost a copy of this book due to a hurricane and water damage and ordered a replacement. This book has always intrigued me because after much reading and reflection, I decided that it does not postulate that there are 12 kinds of people in the world. However, there are traits and tendencies in people that are worth understanding as you navigate your way through life. When you read this book you might find yourself and those around you described very well. It delves into the way that individuals approach life, For instance, two taurus men could have diametrically different ideas about any subject, but it is their intense (translated as stubborn) tendency to cling to that belief after much reflection that is frankly, very consistent in the ones you know. Taken one step further, these broad tendencies among astrological signs could potentially affect a relationship. Whether you believe in astrology or not, this book is worth reading to recognize our own individual traits that could be improved if recognized. Linda Goodman makes a huge subject a lot of fun.
