Whether or not you agree with the thesis of this elegant little book, you’ve got to love some of the imagery: a tame chipmunk named Little One, a Grand Canyon sunrise in our minds, the opposite musicalities of Barker’s parents, and more conceptually, his notion (derived from physics) of a “sum over future histories, resolving into the now.” The whole structure of the book is built around a lovely paradigm, the idea that apparently conflicting judgments can be true along differing dimensions. The book is well worth reading for qualities like these, and for its quiet precision of language and analogy. Its appeal is poetic rather than polemical though, and after reading I found myself disagreeing as profoundly as ever with its core assumption. That assumption is expressed several times in the book, but without much support, as if it were a settled matter of science rather than a leap of faith. For instance in the sentence: “Your actions are all predetermined by unconscious natural causes before you are aware of them.” While reading, I kept expecting Barker to backpedal and start replacing the word “predetermined” in statements like this with something less absolutist like “constrained.” But the line of thought never budges from strict, dogmatic determinism, the belief that there is an unbroken chain of inevitability tracing through all events. And yet that whole wild extrapolation of strict causality is, first of all, so counterintuitive. As a jazz musician and an author, can he really believe that each note or word he’s ever been inspired to reach for was written already, eons before anyone’s birth, in some minor imbalance of the pre-atomic plasma?Forgive me, but isn’t this just reconfiguring the traditional omnipotence and omniscience of god into an equally mystical scientism? Of course causality exists, David Hume notwithstanding; and we observe it in particular in certain mechanical relationships that are readily induced and measured. But there is no reason to postulate the total absence of any relationships other than strict causality among events, such as might be represented in consciousness. Certainly our experience of life tell us that we are at least somewhat free, and why should we assume that such a fundamental level of experience must be illusory? It seems so much more plausible that nature and the sequence of causality create parameters for us, capacities of various kinds, instincts, predilections, etc, which yes of course are rather deterministic at the population level - but that at the same time sentience is able to carve a degree of genuine individual freedom within this flow of events. The analogy would be life itself, and its ability to carve a niche of evolutionary order as a kind of back-current in the flow of entropy. There is of course no syllogism to prove that free will exists. The determinist can answer any seemingly free action by insisting it was foreordained. You can even argue, seemingly irrefutably, that determinists are inconsistent in their own lives, because they make efforts of various kinds (writing books, raising children, resisting enemies, etc), while allegedly considering all effort to be futile. But of course the answer even to this is, I do so only because I have no ability to do otherwise.Perhaps the most marvelous feature of Dan Barker’s charming book comes roughly halfway through. Namely, while he was typing one day out on his back patio, Little One (the chipmunk) hopped onto his keyboard and made a random hyphen. Barker left the hyphen in. He would have us believe that neither he nor the chipmunk had a choice in the matter.

What a gem of a little book this is! Beautifully written with stories, analogies, and models that uniquely resolve the paradox of free will in a deterministic universe. This book is a joy to read because of Dan Barker's new way of looking at the free will debate. The author deftly incorporates his musical background to aid our understanding in a satisfying way. Just as melody and harmony create beautiful music so does society give meaning to our individual lives. The end result is harmonic freedom that frees our minds from the debate scientists and philosophers have waged over the millennia. To see it from Dan Barker's perspective is to assert the truth of science and the truth of what it really means to be fully human. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants a basic introduction to free will, as well as to those who are well seasoned in the field of the free will debate, and would like to see it from a fresh perspective.

Dan Barker never shies away from intricate philosophical probing; in fact he takes the issue of free will versus determinism to analogies with musical forms and other processes. Yet somehow Free Will Explained is never dry, never high-falutin'. He will share his thoughts about a chipmunk that intrudes upon his thinking time, giving the reader accessible, amusing personal anecdotes that explain concepts that would be incomprehensible in any other writer's hands.

I had high expectations when I began reading Dan Barker's book, "Free Will Explained." Being a firm non-believer in free will, I figured that Barker, an avowed atheist, would give free will the same de-bunking as Sam Harris and numerous other scientifically minded authors have.I'm a free will junkie.I find this subject fascinating. I've read most of the books that argue free will doesn't exist, even though we humans believe we possess it. So since the subtitle of Barker's book is How Science and Philosophy Converge to Create a Beautiful Illusion, I expected a rational, reasonable, factual explanation of not only why free will is an illusion, but the benefit of giving up a belief in it.Well, even before I got through the introduction, I found myself writing more and more question marks in the margins, because what Barker was saying made so little sense. He admits that free will is a fiction. Determinism rules through chains of causes and effects. So far, so good.Where Barker lost me is his contention that "Free will is a product of judgment." He claims that "free will is irrelevant -- it doesn't even exist -- until you judge behavior. It is a retroactive product of judgment."He's talking about a particular sort of judgment, moral judgments. Supposedly free will is a social truth, like marriage. Well, this goes against how almost everybody in the world, aside from Barker, I guess, looks upon free will.Almost everybody feels like they possess free will, even though it is an illusion. Likewise, almost everybody says "the sun is setting" rather than "the Earth is revolving." We feel like we have free will when we're alone, just as we see the sun setting when we're alone. If someone is by themselves on a desert island, they are still going to feel like they have free will, no moral judgement required. We choose a flavor of ice cream. We pick a book to buy. We decide where to go on vacation. None of these decisions entail making moral judgments, unless the meaning of "moral" is stretched far beyond its normal usage. I fail to see how a sense of free will only arises after a judgment is made, but this is a core tenet of Barker's book. Now, what bothers me the most about "Free Will Explained" isn't the crazy way Barker looks upon free will, but the implications he draws from that viewpoint. Unlike virtually every other author who writes about the illusion of free will, somehow Barker is simultaneously able to embrace the reality of determinism while also claiming that we are morally responsible for our actions."We can be completely unfree, yet also completely accountable for our own actions," he writes. Barker further asserts that "moral accountability only needs to go as far back in time as the mental decision to act was made."So even though someone's decision to rob a bank, say, was completely determined by their genetics, upbringing, and countless life experiences, Barker is fine with the justice system assuming that they possessed free will and could have chosen to not rob the bank. Hence, it is perfectly justified, in Barker's view, to exact retribution for freely willed acts, rather than viewing criminality as something that society needs to be protected from, and the criminal rehabilitated from.Barker goes so far as to write, "Yes, the brain tumor (or whatever) is one of the causes of the action, but the individual human being is the actual perpetrator. It is irrelevant to ask whether the person was ultimately free or not. We only assume the person was immediately free."Huh? Barker admits that free will is an illusion, It doesn't exist. Yet somehow he is OK with a judge or jury assuming that someone with a brain tumor was "immediately free" at the moment of making a decision, even though the tumor caused them to act in a certain unlawful way.One of the more annoying parts of Barker's book is when he raises the straw man of determinists failing to praise people or favoring moral education. He says that when his children took their first steps and he clapped his hands to congratulate them, "Should I have acted like a dull determinist and coldly remarked to my kids, 'That's no big deal. You had no choice'?"Geez. Barker doesn't understand how us determinists view reality. Everything at the level of everyday life is determined, everything! (I'm leaving out quantum phenomena, though arguably these also are determined, albeit in a probabilistic sense.)A determinist is going to praise their children because this is what they have been determined to do. If they don't, then they have been determined to do that. There's no getting outside of the bounds of determinism in our causal universe. At the end of his book Barker notes that "Free will is not a scientific truth, it is a social truth." Again, this doesn't make sense. An illusory sense of free will exists in humans because it has some sort of evolutionary advantage. This makes it a scientific truth. The illusion of free will also is a scientific truth, as Barker readily admits.Yet he persists in believing that it is better that people believe in the illusion, than in the truth. He appears to be fine with exacting retributive justice that is justified by a judge or jury assuming that someone possessed the free will to not commit a crime.Amazingly, Barker goes so far as to say, "Denying free will is a put-down to human nature." Wow. Discovering the truth that free will is an illusion is a put-down to human nature? I heartily disagree. For centuries people had the illusion that some races are superior to others, which justified slavery. They also had the illusion that women are the weaker sex and shouldn't be able to vote, among other consequences of that illusion.Belief in free will isn't an innocent illusion. It is used to justify harsh punishments, since our justice system is founded on an assumption that, aside from insanity, people are free to either commit a crime or refrain from that behavior. Books like the one Barker wrote aren't merely wrong, they are dangerous.

It is very difficult to find outdoor cooking dutch oven recipe books that don't involve lots of mixes, pillsbury canned refreigerated biscuits, and canned soups. This book is such an incredible relief from all that. There are some recipes that call for canned condensed soups and such, but most of the recipes do not. And the recipes I've tried are very good. Many of the recipes are very straightforward and uncomplicated to make, but do require some prep time. If you're looing for outdoor recipes that require only the minimum of preparation, then this is not your book. The many other books out there would suit you better - the ones with the mixes and canned condensed soups, etc. Those recipes are the fastest and easiest to make. But if you want to explore a bit more or a lot more complexity, this book will provide a range of recipes to try. Many of the recipes can be made with a single dutch oven, while some will require an additional dutch oven or frypan or saucepan. Some recipes might be a bit too fussy for me to make when camping, but most that I've read through seem easy enough to do outdoors. The ones I've tried have been easy and fast to make. In the case of cakes and toppings for example, I pre-measure the dry ingredients and put them together in zip-locks so I'm not having to measure when I'm cooking. You can also pre-prep meats for many recipes as well. Just common-sense to reduce the amount of stuff you have to take with you and to reduce the amount of preparation at the time of cooking. Many here have complained there aren't enough cooking directions. However the author gives a chart of the number of coals needed for the bottom and the top at a given temperature. She always tells you the temperature you need for every recipe, so you just go back to that chart to see what coals you need where. Note that the charcoal suggstions are for aluminum dutch ovens - she tells you how to increase the number needed for cast iron DO's. You can make all these recipes in either a dutch oven while camping over briquettes or at home in your kitchen.Anyway, if I had only one dutch oven recipe book, this would be it. You can get more detailed DO cooking isntructions on the web if you need them.

Too many fancy recipes that require a whole lot of ingredients. Way too many to bring on a camping trip. I was looking for simpler foods to cook in a dutch oven. Not for beginners - absolutely nothing about how many briquettes on top/bottom to maintain a cetain temp. Just cook at x degrees for x minutes. Might as well use the house oven,

Many of the reviews talk about lack of information on how many charcoal briquettes to use for each recipe. Apparently they didn't read page 4 which give the complete temp to briquet conversion chart. Furthermore I have a almost a dozen dutch oven cook books, I don't think one of the cook books agrees to how many charcoal briquettes it takes to reach a given temperature. Think about it; Half the briquettes are missing sizable chunks or are half pieces, then the longer they burn the smaller they get and so give off less heat. The more white ash that builds up on the coal the cooler they get, so there are just too many variables to give temperature settings like you would on a stove. Therein is the skill involved in being a dutch oven chef. You just need to get the temp into the ballpark and adjust the cooking time to compensate.I was also afraid of all the comments about camping tips and environmental advice such as burying your feces. Those commenting made it sound like it takes up half the book, while in actuality it only takes up about 5% of the book.(maybe less) The environmental issues seem a little extreme to me, but I didn't buy the book to teach me to be an environmentalist, I bought it to be a better cook and it accomplishes that hands down. There appear to be hundreds of inventive, and interesting recipes. I like the little explanations/history behind many of the recipes. Usually just a small paragraph, but enough to add interest, and a story line to the recipe. I am excited to try some of them out. This book will bring true cuisine to the outdoors. From what I've seen in this book, it is a must have for any camper/dutch oven chef. I don't give praise lightly, in fact I am quite critical, but I am impressed with this cook book and can't wait to get cooking! Forget about the dummies who can't read a chart as to how many briquettes it takes to make 350 degrees, it is only a ball park recommendation anyway. I haven't met a dutch oven cook yet that could tell how many coals for 350 degrees and how many for 375, at least not without a thermometer and trial and error.Since my previous review I have had the summer to use this cook book, and it has quickly jumped to the front of my favorite cookbooks. I have had favorite recipes that I have used for years and they have been outmatched by recipes in this cookbook. I go by the theory that when camping the best cook wins! This book is a champion. I still have some cookbooks that I would recommend, but none more so than this one. I am in the process of buying them as Christmas presents for my children, as I introduce them to cooking in the great outdoors. These recipes will bring your cooking to a whole new level...may the best cook win.

I gave this book a 4 star rating because I have only triedone recipe. I made the chicken enchilada recipe in my dutchoven last night and it was outstanding. Based onreading the book I have the following impressions.Pros: The one recipe I tried was wonderful. Everything else looks good, too.Cons: The book is billed as being for river trips. However some of the ingredients are impossible to get while running desert Southwest US rivers. For example, fresh blueberries. Probably just fine for the Northwest US.Pro or Con. It took 2 1/2 hours to prepare and make the one recipe I tried. Not good if you would rather spend your time hiking. Good if you are looking for something to occupy long winter evenings on a river trip which is why I decided to try dutch oven cooking.

This was a waste of money. I was not expecting a book on Dutch Oven cooking to have recipes for vegetables, salads, hollandaise sauce and the like. I have plenty of other cookbooks for that kind of thing. You are better off getting The Camp Dutch Oven Cookbook by Robin Donovan.

If you like to camp out as much as I do, you would like this book. Lots of good recipes you can uses in the woods. I love cooking over the fire, and coals.

Great little book with fun recipes for a dutch oven. Can't wait to try them all out.

This is the most poorly edited book I've ever seen. I've purchased these for over 20 years. The editing is horrible. The index listing takes you to the firearm listed, but the information on the particular firearms is not with the pictures. Book is greatly overpriced as a reference book. Save your money!

Came very quickly and is the bible to gun values. Gun owners bible!

As advertised

If you want to know current gun values then the latest edition of Gun Trader's Guide is packed with info. It's the best gun reference guide and at an affordable price.

About the Author

Hans and Margret Rey created many books during their lives together, including Curious George, one of the most treasured classics of all time, as well as other favorites like Spotty and Pretzel. But it was their rambunctious little monkey who became an instantly recognizable icon. After the Reys escaped Paris by bicycle in 1940 carrying the manuscript for the original Curious George, the book was published in America in 1941. More than 200 Curious George titles followed, with 75 million books sold worldwide. Curious George has been successfully adapted into a major motion picture and an Emmy-winning television show on PBS.

We own almost every Curious George book that has been published, either paperback or a collection of stories in a hardcover. I noticed we were missing one, so I ordered this without really reading anything about it. When it arrived as a stocking stuffer for Christmas, I was surprised at how thick it is! Our kids (ages 4 and 2) really enjoy it, but sometimes we have to put it off for another night if it's late and the kids need to get to sleep. It's almost like a few different Curious George books combined into one.Overall, though, it's a very cute book and I'm glad I bought it. It came with a read-along CD, which we have yet to try out. This is certainly a must-have for those who love Curious George!(As a side note, Curious George is not actually a "monkey," because monkeys have tails. George is an ape.) :o)

several short stories that flow from one to the next, it is easy to read a few at bedtime and my son is happy if we don't read all 50+ pages. great book!

beware of the number of pages. I got this because my 18 month old loves curious George. Well I failed to notice it's like 80 pages. He won't sit through it so we put it up until he's older.

great product and service

A replacement for a well worn library copy - arrived in great shape.

Long book, but still a great adventure with George.

It's a book - with words, and a binding, and pictures-- it didn't disappoint

I bought the app for my 4 year old. So I bought her this book to accompany it. She loves curious George n can read alot f the passages.

As a Protestant, I pray directly to God to confess my sins. However, James 5:16 says "Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed." So confessing to a priest as a stand in for the congregation will certainly fit. 1 John 1:9 gives clear instruction to believers about confessing sin. It begins with the word if: "If we confess our sin, He is faithful and just to forgive our sin and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness." So no problem there either. The author correctly states it is not so much about our individual actions or thoughts as about our relationship with God. I found all of his secrets useful and well thought out. Especially on how this is such an individual thing, and not a one size fits all grocery list. And delivers it all with humor and good writing that keeps you reading instead of frowning Pharisee style. I found nothing whatever to grumble at. Rats.

In a way, I suspect we all know the 7 secrets deep within us. But the depth of Vinny Flynn's analysis is so honest and personal all in line with Church teaching it actually was one of the more compelling books I've read this year. Just when I thought he hit the main point of each secret, there would be more layers he would uncover. I dare not reveal the secrets here, other than they unpack theology into coherent and clear meaning that even non-Catholics could grasp the concepts. In other words, Vinny Flynn blows open the gate to the long standing cliche of confession and brings it right up to us in very simple terms: God is giving us a chance to come back. It's all there for us if we want it.Throughout the secrets, Flynn combines personal testimony with two big juggernauts, the Catechism (including the astounding section #2840) and Sr. Faustina's Diary revelations. For those on the heavy systematic theology or dogmatic side this might not be for you. Flynn's style is to appeal to the more regular folk and his casual, chatty style may not work for some readers. But what he has to say is required reading for all yearning to overcome the chains that are weighing them down -- and how to do it.This is a positive, hopeful and tremendously insightful book that will truly compel you to want to start anew today. If you let it, allow it to open your heart. As you read on you will find that while you are grateful that it helps you approach Confession in a new light, you will want to read even more about God's love for each of us. "Nothing that you or I have ever done, ever will do, or ever could do, can make Him stop loving us."

Vinny Flynn's "Seven Secrets Of Confession" is a wonderful easy-to-book read not only for Catholics but for Christians alike. No question that the author makes the reader appreciate the Sacrament of Reconciliation and makes going to confession more that just obtaining absolution as well as receiving forgiveness for the sins committed to God and the offenses made against the Lord Almighty. Through the secrets taught by the author, it will allow the reader to gain a better insight on the Sacrament and learn to receive a enriching experience in going to confession with the use of the Holy Scriptures and the Catholic dogmas as well as transcripts from the "Diary of Saint Maria Faustina Kowalska"Added to that, the reader will also learn how to become a better person to form a better relationship with God and to avoid committing the same sins constantly as it makes him realize the root of the sins committed.Other items taught are how to make better examination of conscience and prayers that help one during the sacrament.Overall,it will motivate Catholics particularly new converts to confess their sins to a priest.

This is a great book that will have you looking forward to going to confession. It isn't just about getting confession out of your system so you can receive Communion. This book gives you many insights you may have never considered before. For instance, the fact that confession is all about healing and is an ongoing process. We are not just "fixed" after confession. I think most of us know that we will be back sooner or later and probably sooner. There are many other points to consider in this book. We used it during our apologetics class and soon everyone had a copy. This is a book you will want everyone to benefit from so order more than one copy. Trust me, you will want to read sections of it over and over again.

I read Flynn's other book, the 7 Secrets of the Eucharist, and I enjoyed it. It was simple and lovely, but it didn't change my life. I expected this book to be comparable... but no. This book is far, far more. This book was fabulous. I will read it again and I have already begun to dole it out to any who will take it. Flynn's approach to confession is truly life changing to me. And he has key pieces I find I use in prayer almost daily.I highly recommend this to anyone. It is phenomenal.

After reading Ina May's other book, the guide to childbirth, I wanted to read this book as well for the more spiritual aspect. Both books cover a lot of the same material, but this one definitely fits the title with spiritual. It is amazingly hippie-tastic. I love it. I found both of these books to be very empowering and really take the fear and mystery out of birth. Our culture is so weird with its fear driven tactics of birth and quickly opting out of any pain, this book (as well as the other one) really demystify the fear and pain around childbirth and take it back to what it is: your body doing what it's been made to do.Great birth stories, lots of spiritual wisdom, and a midwife guide in the back of the book which is helpful for the diagrams and preparing you for what types of things your midwife will be doing while you labor. This book and her other one I think are musts for any woman looking to empower herself and have a natural birth. I would say to just stick with the guide to childbirth if you are looking for something more cut and dry, but I really did appreciate this book for how out there it was with its language and psychedelic talk.

As a first-time mom without any other pregnant friends, it is difficult to develop realistic expectations for birth -- particularly if you intend to have a "natural" birth in a hospital setting. I have received a huge range of unsolicited birth stories from well-intended friends and family, but most of them are either 1) funny or 2) scary anecdotes that don't help me prepare in any way to give birth. Although we can't control what people say to us in a grocery store line or at a family function, we can seek out stories (like this book) that will give us POSITIVE PERSPECTIVES on the birth process.PROS:- This book is really positive and life-affirming. Expecting moms and dads need all the emotional support we can get!- The variety of birth scenarios and perspectives was fantastic. Lots of different parent personalities and labor/delivery approaches were reviewed in a non-judgmental style.- Most of the "natural births" detailed in this book were in home environments, but could have easily been supervised by cooperative physicians and nurses. Ina May and the other midwives acknowledge the role medical professionals played in the few necessary interventions. They obviously have a good working relationship and rapport with nearby hospitals.- It talks honestly about the complex emotions, sensations, apprehensions and relationships of the parents going through the birth process.- While most of the stories are from mothers, some are also written by the fathers. As a person who is married to a strong, capable, loving man who plans to be my "birth partner" in labor and delivery, I was happy to see this perspective. Dads need to be educated and empowered, too!- This is a text meant to enrich and empower your understanding of birth, not explain the medical/biological processes. We all need an escape from the clinical birth guides.CONS:- Starting with stories as far back as the 1970s, the lingo in the book was sometimes distracting ("feeling Holy", "telepathic", "psychadelic" etc.).- Each story is 1-2 pages long, and many were written years (or decades) after the birth happened. This means some of the stories seem glossed over and a bit too easy to be realistic. I appreciate that the storytellers are doing their best to recount what was meaningful to them, but it seems like important factual details are missing from about 25% of the stories.CONCLUSION (4.5 STARS):- Great perspective on the emotions associated with birth.- Empowering stories of mothers and fathers working together to bring their little ones into the world.- I feel more mentally prepared and more confident as my due date approaches.

Excellent book and one every pregnant lady (or midwife or other interested parties) should read. It has helped me to enjoy being a woman more and also being pregnant more. It has helped me to not be so scared of labor, birth, and delivery. Instead, I can face it (I am coming up on my third labor here in August) with God-given strength and happiness.A word of caution, I did find it a bit too "mystic minded" at times, but one need not toss the baby with the bath water. There is plenty of good and amazing information in this book to use and apply.Christian women, as much as any other sect of women, need to reclaim their minds & bodies from the overly influential medical system that claims we (women) can't do what God has designed our bodies to do and therefore need additional help (drugs, etc.). I believe that we can do it and we should do it as God intended it (i.e. natural childbirth).

I found this book and Ina May's "Guide to Childbirth" to be invaluable in my preparations for my first child. The reading is smooth and comforting and the stories are so varied, but all so empowering. I am certain that these two books are what gave me the strength and knowledge to have an entirely natural child birth (in a hospital, we couldn't afford a midwife in our area). Because of these stories, I was prepared for anything and I believed in my baby and body. I accepted the pain, kept breathing, and "rode the waves". Child birth was the hardest and most glorious experience of my life. I am so grateful to Ina May and the other women in these books for sharing their wisdom. I truly have love in my heart for them. No one in my family had much to share about birth, especially natural birth. It's just not something they talk about. If it hadn't been for these books I would have felt alone, scared, and possibly made decisions about birth that I wasn't comfortable with. These books made me feel welcome and safe in this beautiful part of life and gave me the power to have the type of birth I wanted for my son and myself. I can't express it enough. Don't bother with any other books on the topic, even if you want the epidural or other assistance, I'm positive this and the other book will help you. I would read, "A Guide to Childbirth" first and then this one. I think the other book is a bit more "universal" and it has a lot of good information about possible complications, ect. "Spiritual Midwifery" is as it sounds, a little more on the "hippie" spectrum, but absolutely pure gold. (yay! my first review! never been anything so important/worth it before) Good Luck Ladies!!! Your body was designed for this, embrace and love it!
