This book starts with the deepest, darkest, most hopeless places of faith and ends with the most joyful and hopeless jewels that are offered by God. It makes you traverse all of the harrowing details about the final judgement, purgatory, pain and suffering, and sin, before finally leading you to the hopeful place devoted to the rewards of the elect.In this book you discover more information on judging the decay of present day, the meaning and construction of hell, purgatory, and heaven, the attributes of the anti-Christ and the Christ. It evaluates the requirements Heaven and Hell in accordance with justice.It forewarned against the relativism of today, apathy, selfishness, and cruelty, and then expresses the love and commitment of God. While first I felt hopeless it then reminded me that God desires everyone to make it to heaven, but if they don't want to follow the rules he accepts that.

Rarely do I see so few negative reviews of a book! Consider there have been hundreds of ratings of this phenomenal tome and nearly all are 5 stars. After reading the book, I understand why. Written in the 1800s by a religious in France it spells out the Catholic position without touchy-feely temporal considerations. It is actually scary, but it will scare you straight. I suspect most people who read it in the 21st century will either reform their lives or become heathens. Special kudos to the interpreter Susan Conroy who brought it to the English language after hunting it down in Europe.

A grandiloquent previous reviewer and the synopsis of the book point out the importance of this book to St. Therese, so I won't go into that here. I think it stands well enough on its own even despite its connection to the Little Flower.I would divide this book into three sections: first, it presents a Catholic end-times theology, and details the coming of the Antichrist, Resurrection of the Dead, and Last Judgment. Next, it discusses Purgatory, Heaven, and Hell. Finally, it discusses the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass and suffering, which of course deal with this world but have consequences in the hereafter. The chapters of the book are actually conferences that Fr. Arminjon presented, and since they were initially delivered as speeches they are easy reading despite the wealth of information they contain. The translation is excellent.With the popularity of the Left Behind series and the importance of end-times theology to the Evangelical Protestant community, it's nice to have a presentation of Catholic eschatology. I've had a hard time finding a book that does what this one does--namely presenting what exactly will happen when the time comes for Christ to return. Catholics place less of an emphasis on this than Protestants, but it's still a part of our religion and needs to be understood. This book was written before the historical-critical interpretation of scripture became prevalent in the Catholic Church, and so prophesy is interpreted literally instead of being explained away as a metaphor only relevant to the ancient author. It's frightening, but living life with one eye fixed on the four last things will make anyone a better Christian.

I am an old time Pentecostal that began attending a conservative, pro-life Lutheran Church (Missouri Synod) because I believe in the real presence of Jesus in the Eucharist. I still believe in tongues, so I guess that makes me a Charismatic Lutheran.Father Arminjon's lectures covered two topics in particular that blessed me.One was the chapter on Purgatory. Protestants believe that our works and deeds done in the Body will be tried by fire because St. Paul wrote that. Nowhere does it tell us how long and how severe the fire will be, so the doctrine of Purgatory is not too hard for me as a Protestant to believe.The second reason I give this book a great recommendation is the last chapter on Christian suffering as the means of redemption. Protestants throw the baby out with the bath water when we reject the doctrine of redemptive suffering. Even though I am not fully convinced that we play a part in our redemption through suffering, I do see that it is a powerful means of purgation in this world. We grow through our sufferings, and while most Protestants agree with this, we may tend to avoid it more than we should, at least that has been my own personal experience.I am trying with God's grace to not only accept my sufferings but to embrace them. This is a hard thing to do, and I keep falling away from it, but this book helps remind me to do it.

This is the only end times book that I know of written from a Catholic Priest. It’s based on the late nineteenth century series of conferences given by Father Charles Arminjon, a priest from France who assembled his flock in the town cathedral to preach about the next life’s glorious rewards.The Little Flower, St Therese was in the audience. Reading it, she says, “plunged my soul into a happiness not of this earth.”I ordered this book used from one of the religious sellers on amazon. I was glad I did because a seminary student had underlined pertinent passages which helped me during my reading & study of this wonderful piece of knowledge. I’m on my second reading. I bought a copy of this book for every family member’s household, so they can build up their Catholic Christian library.

They follow the Scripture text, usually, that Newton was preaching on that particular Sunday.They are beautiful, meditative, calming to the spirit. They are organized by several different kinds of index, so you can quickly look up a hymn/poem on a particular topic or Bible verse if you wish.If you are a believer and enjoy the Bible, the Olney Hymns can be a meditative-type of devotional exercise; or just a relaxing quiet reading of Scripture topics written in poetry form. There are a tone of them!

This volume of John Newton's works is well done. It is very well organized and displayed. I don't think anyone will be disappointed.

Most hymmnologists glibly talk and write about the famous collection called "Olney Hymns" but few have actally read through the texts in this famous hymnal gathered by John Newton, author of the universally loved hymn "Amazing Grace".

Newton's Olney Hymns made a wonderful addition to my hymn book collection. These hymns by John Newton tell a story of repentance and the joys brought through salvation by grace. The richness of the language and the message in the hymns make reading them and singing of them a blessing. A fine addition to any collection

Very interesting collection of John Newton hymns. He has an introductory letter. The hymns are grouped by the Bible, event, or topic. It is a pleasant addition to quiet time.

Other hymns written by the author of "Amazing Grace." An excellent source for a music history research paper.

Charles Doe's collection of John Newton's Olney Hymns gives someone wanting to research or study Newton's hymns a very well organized and concise research tool. I especially appreciate his organizing Newton's Olney hymns from three books into one book with three sections. Also, his "first lines" index and definitions of 18th century English vernacular were very helpful.

For the price this is great, very clean lay out, nice type set and scriptures are quoted in full. Maybe someday they will make this in a hardcover edition and combine Wiliam Cowpers hymns as well. Lord willing may buy some more copies. Already thinking they may be of use to some of my children.

He succeded famously, introducing readers to all of Apache culture, through the narration of his friend and informant which brought to life what are often boring details. Since Chris, his informant, was in training to be a shaman, we get some rare insight into Apache religion.The book reads well and covers enough of Apache life to satisfy readers new to Southwest Indian cultures.ernestschusky.com

This is the fascinating and absorbing life story of a Mescalero/Chiracahua Apache man -- one who, when he was just a small child, knew Geronimo. Told in his own words, the story is annotated by a white ethnologist, Opler, who made a study of the Apache people over several decades and knew this man very well (the first section of the book explains the culture and historical context), so that all references made by the speaker can be understood by any reader. As he recalls events of his life, he draws the reader deeper into his experience: from his respect and love of the old Apache ways, to the stress and anxiety created by tribal and family disruption caused by government interference. He speaks often and at length about the uses of spiritual power as found in plants, animals, and the earth. This book was apparently written as a textbook for cultural anthropology at Stanford University, but it also deserves our attention for its humanity and for the intriguing story it tells.

I read this in 1969 in the university library, playing hookey from the subjects I should have been swatting. Was just telling a friend about it and looked it up on Amazon to see if it was still available. What it taught me about Mescalero animal allies and attitudes towards the relationship between human and non-human worlds has stayed with me for over 40 years.

First, I hate when I watch a book here at full price & finally decide to go ahead and buy it,then it drops to 32% off as this one has when I recieve it, read it, & it's time to rate or review it. *sighs* On with my review . . . This thin book briefly chronicles Royo's commission to paint a gentleman's modern Russian castle's dome with 45 life-size nude women. (Think Michaelangelo's Sistine Chapel on a much smaller---though still large--scale with Royo's sapphoric/lesbian sex-themed erotic Prohibited series' content.) The only males are three cloaked & hooded voyeurs in one panel, one of whom is definately Royo and the others may be his son, who helped his father all those months to execute this arduous project, and the owner of the dome. The text is brief but sufficient to basically explain major stages of the project. The photographs consist of his studio pre-work; his dome transfers; his dome paintings-in-progress; pieces of his final works; then the dome itself. I would have liked to have seen each panel have its own picture in the end and read more details about the execution of such a long & complicated project. This book is obviously not like his others due to the content, but it is a nice book about a wonderful project for a great artist of our time.

Nice look at his over all design of the Dome. Maybe not a book in kid's reach but a nice addition to my collection of his work.

He is my favorite artist besides Frida and his art is so erotic and dark, is love, its passion, he probably gets paid alot of money. I wish I could paint naked women for a living.

There isn't much to this book, you can read it in a few minutes but I recommend it all the same because of the concept and the beautiful Luis Royo art.The world needs more rich people with a vision to make good use of artistic talent. Visionary with no artistic talents + artist with a creative block = unlimited creative potential.
