I read this book hoping to get an idea of the practice of medicine through the eyes of some mid-nineteenth century physicians. With the goal of researching my own historical book, I tried to understand the process of diagnosis and treatment of common diseases the pioneer doctor faced. I liked the writing which flowed well and kept interest with examples and period anecdotes. The course of the book seemed to pass from one physician or practitioner anecdote to the next and, for my purposes, lacked the degree of organization that I required to et a solid notion of diagnosis and treatment during this period. I enjoyed reading the book but was disappointed in the lack of medical details and in the way the book was organized.

My grandmother saw this book at her doctor's office and was upset that she had to quit reading it when they finally called her back. I ordered it for her before she left the building. She loves this book!

Finally a biographical approach to real people . I am getting a real feel for the ancestors who now I care about.

Tremendous history.

"Frontier Medicine: from the Atlantic to the Pacific, 1492-1941" is a book which covers a much neglected part of the history of "the American West." It gives us a fascinating look at the earliest arrivals of Europeans to the shores of what later became the United States of America, and how the (often crude) medical skills of these pioneers, sometimes supplemented by herbal knowledge of the Indians, were used to treat injured or sick people.Reading this history about frontier medicine one wonders, not just at the almost total lack in that era of any medical knowledge about diseases and how to cure them and/or the way the human body works, but that so many people still managed to survive their treatments, often more deadly than the sicknesses they were suffering from.Especially to modern eyes, one shivers to think being visited by such a "medical professional" at ones sickbed, and being "treated" by bleeding, purging either by emetic or by enema, blistering, and/or medicines (those last often with ingredients that we would consider poison today) to get the "humors" of the human body back in its proper balance. Or, for that matter, being wounded in battle because almost inevitably the wound would become infected (sanitation was almost unheard off) and the only "remedy" was amputation of that body-part - which most didn't survive.Anyway, in "Frontier Medicine" we get an excellent overview of the very different groups of people who "came west". We start out with the Spanish, who arrived first in the Americas and who were later followed by the English and the French. The European medical knowledge of that time is covered, and how this was implemented by the pioneers and sometimes improved on by things learned from interactions with the Indians. We learn how the fur traders and trappers, sometimes for weeks or months alone in a vast wilderness, treated themselves when they became injured. Sometimes showcasing their immense hardiness as in the case of Hugh Glass, who was mauled by a bear and left for dead by his fellow travelers when he went into a coma, but recovered and literally crawled his way to survival (having used maggots to eat out the infection out of the wound on his back). We get treated to the story of the immigrants on the Oregon Trail and how they treated those who became ill or injured during their travels to the Californian gold fields; how the soldiers who served at isolated outposts during the Indian Wars were taken care off; how on homesteads, ranches and in the early western towns the first doctors started practicing their medical profession and how they treated their patients (and how they were paid). The Civil War is covered, and shows us the horrors of warfare and its impact on the swamped medical services of that time, which were overloaded with patients. We learn how soldiers who survived the shock of being wounded and only hours or even days later being taken to the army hospital, their wounds almost inevitably having become infected, had to suffer the amputations of their infected limbs with no anesthetics to speak off (except a drink of whisky to dull the pain as the medic sawed and hacked to cut off the limb). We learn how midwives helped deliver babies in the colonial era and beyond, while more and more the medical profession worked to eliminate them by getting lawmakers in many states to require that anyone attending a woman in labor have formal medical training and be licensed (while females were denied medical training). And we are also told how the first women doctors started making their rounds; their struggle to become doctors immense, because they were often denied medical education and rejected at almost all the medical schools they applied to.Strangely, the part after 1900 is only covered in just one chapter, the last one named: "Into the twentieth century". In this last chapter he mentions: "The evidence is strong that 1941 marked the end of medicine's frontier period in America". This is supposedly the reason this book covers the period of 1492-1941. Okay, that may be so, but then Dary all but neglects to give us the evidence on which this is based.A point could be made that ending this book around the 1900's would make more sense, because around the 1900's there was no more "frontier" to discover; Alaska, "the last American frontier" was purchased in 1867 and the Klondike Gold Rush took place in 1898, which was one of the last periods there was massive "immigration", although these were mainly people just after the gold, no settlers who decided to stick around as most of the '49-ers did during the California gold rush.If for the sake of argument one extends the "frontier" period to 1941 like Dary does, then why is this not covered in much more detail? No mention is made of the Spanish-American war of 1898 in Cuba and the medical problems caused by treating injured and/or sick soldiers in an area know for its unhealthy climate and the many diseases. More soldiers were killed by diseases than by bullets or cannonballs. No mention is made of how, after the Spanish-American War, in 1900 major Walter Reed, M.D., headed the Yellow Fever Board which confirmed Cuban doctor Carlos Finley's theory that yellow fever is transmitted by mosquitoes. And amazingly, for a book covering the period up to 1941, the First World War is not covered at all, which had a major impact on medical care to wounded and/or maimed soldiers (or those suffering from poison gas attacks) and neither is the great Influenza Epidemic of 1918/1919.An argument could be made that he also should have covered the building of the Panama Canal, from the period the Americans took over. One of the major difficulties faced by the builders was that typhoid, dysentery, malaria, and yellow fever, among other diseases, often ravaged the workforce. It was not just the American mechanical and engineering technology that made it possible for it to finally be achieved, but most of all the amazing medical improvements (Dr. William Gorges!) that made it possible to continue building the Canal. He makes note of some military medical personnel being awarded the Medal of Honor. Great that he pays attention for this; but then he makes the, for an historian, inexplicable mistake of calling it the Congressional Medal of Honor. This is not correct; it is called the Medal of Honor. Now, often the general public and lots of politicians call it mistakenly the "Congressional" Medal of Honor, but any serious student of American (military) history knows that this is incorrect, caused because of its award by the Department of Defense "in the name of Congress." As a historian, David Dary should not have made this mistake. For the above mentioned reasons, I withdraw one star from this review; otherwise it is an excellent history on this much neglected part of America's frontier period that I recommend wholeheartedly to anyone interested in this subject.

I'm betwixt and between regarding `Frontier Medicine.' On the one hand, the author presents a fair amount of interesting information, particularly about the `practice' (which didn't make perfect) of medicine in the Old West, `patent' medicines, most of which were patently fraudulent, and the difficult course traveled by would-be female practitioners. On the other hand, he does so in a seemingly never-ending series of vignettes and mini-mini-biographies which tend to be repetitive and yet distressingly unsatisfying. Overall, I got the feeling, as with Emily Cockayne's `Hubbub,' that having unearthed the information in his research the author decided he should include it whether or not it really added to the narrative. On the whole, the book is probably worth the read, but you won't be missing all that much if you pass it by.

I bought this for a doctor friend. This is my second purchase of this same book. The first person I gave it to loved it.

Frontier Medicine: From the Atlantic to the Pacific, 1492-1941 This was a well written and researched book. Really fascinating to see how rudimentary early medicine was. Surprising the human race survived some of the barbaric practices. Interesting read!

Review

Major acclaim for Stephanie Nolen' s bestseller" 28: Stories of AIDS in Africa"(a bestseller on the "Maclean' s," the "Globe and Mail" and the "Toronto Star" lists) " Stephanie Nolen looks behind the facts and stats to talk to 28 people across the continent affected by the virus. Through them, she builds up a larger narrative: of mass social stigma and ignorance; corrupt governments; exploitative drug companies; and a dispassionate and largely disinterested West. A welcome dispatch from an epic disaster we ignore at our peril." "-- Metro" (London) " In 28," "Nolen marshals the reporting and storytelling skills that have made her, after UN special envoy Stephen Lewis, this country' s most compelling and vigorous voice for action on the grim parasite worming its way across Africa. In clear, insightful prose and vivid, though never lurid, detail, she allows her characters-- one for every million people-- to tell tales of despair and remarkable courage, willful ignorance and improbable triumph." " -- The Gazette "(Montreal) " Nolen is a gifted listener and storyteller . . . Her collection . . . pays loving tribute to the people of Africa . . . Although history and science are woven lightly in and around the anecdotes and photographic portraits of the 28, this is a book about human life and human nature." -- "The Globe and Mail" " Nolen puts a very human face on HIV/AIDS in Africa. . . . Nolen sees beneath the surfaces of these individuals, estranged and all but destroyed by governmental ineptitude and denial, and evinces their loves and hopes and family ties, their humanness, with which all others can identify." -- "Booklist" " Never sentimental, Nolen lets the people and their experiences speak for themselves. The result is both an informative and a powerful read, which will help Western readers connect personally with a crisis that too often seems remote. . . . A unique, valuable contribution to the literature on this important topic." -- "Library Journal" " A kind of continental survey of the impact of the AIDS pandemic on Africa, in stories that are frequently both tragically sad and just as often hugely inspiring." -- "Calgary Herald" " 28 searing portraits of Africans affected by the deadly virus. . . . With a seasoned journalist' s finesse, Nolen effortlessly weaves technical information-- health statistics, disease data, NGO reports-- into these deeply intimate glimpses of people often overlooked in the flood of contemporary media. Nolen' s book packs a real emotional wallop." -- "Publishers Weekly" " In" "28: Stories of AIDS in Africa, Nolen takes the reader on an emotional journey through the continent as she tells the stories of 28 people fighting HIV/AIDS . . . The stories are powerful, heartfelt and deeply human." -- "Kingston Whig-Standard" " She is an evocative and empathetic writer." -- "The Nation" " [A] powerful, yet restrained, book. . . . Nolen' s book is . . . a journalist' s honest attempt to tell a powerful story using human interest, anecdotes and poignant quotes in 28 profiles." -- "Winnipeg Free Press" " Nolen puts a very humanface on HIV/AIDS in Africa. . . . Nolen sees beneath the surfaces of these individuals, estranged and all but destroyed by governmental ineptitude and denial, and evinces their loves and hopes and family ties, their humanness, with which all others can identify." - "Booklist"" Nolen gives the epidemic a human face - more precisely, 28 human faces, one for each million Africans estimated to be infected with HIV. Ill healthcare workers and activists are portrayed along with ordinary Africans whose lives have been forever changed by AIDS. Nolen tells their stories simply and elegantly, blending their personal experiences with relevant background information about the epidemic. Never sentimental, she lets the people and their experiences speak for themselves. The result is both an informative and a powerful read, which will help Western readers connect personally with a crisis that too often seems remote." - "Library Journal"" 28 searing portraits of Africans affected by the deadly virus. . . . With a seasoned journalist' s finesse, Nolen effortlessly weaves technical information - health statistics, disease data, NGO reports - into these deeply intimate glimpses of people often overlooked in the flood of contemporary media. Nolen' s book packs a real emotional wallop." - "Publishers Weekly"" Magnificent, inspiring, informative. Nolen opens the essential door to the brave, suffering, human reality of the African AIDS crisis." - John le Carre " This is a formidable book of record . . . from the tiny virus, via 28 individual humanstories, to an entire continent. The stories will tear you apart before putting you back together, fully-armed and ready to go to war with a virus more dangerous than any W.M.D." - Bono " This book is magnificent. It' s probably the best book ever written about AIDS, certainly the best I' ve ever read. I wept when I finished, not just because it' s beautifully written, not just because the last chapter tears the heart out, not just because it' s a work of such force and feeling and power, not just because it' s so intensely and astonishingly human, not just because it covers the entire landscape of the virus, but because its impact could shape public opinion as never before." - Stephen Lewis, former UN Special Envoy HIV/AIDS in Africa " A book of quiet yet overwhelming power, delivering a message of devastating moral authority. Moving, heartrending and uplifting, Stephanie Nolen' s book bears impeccable witness to the ' unique and savage' phenomenon of AIDS in Africa." - William Boyd, author of Restless and Brazzaville Beach " If a war had killed 20 million soldiers, and left 28 million more dying of wounds, we' d call it the worst such tragedy since World War II. This is the scale of AIDS in Africa. Stephanie Nolen brings this story to life in a moving, deeply human way. Through these portraits - shrewdly chosen, varied, and sometimes startlingly unexpected- she artfully puts a series of human faces on the greatest health crisis of our time." - Adam Hochschild, author of King Leopold' s Ghost and Bury the Chains " 28 can soon be 48, 98 and more. And not just in Africa. And it does not have to be. Nolen shows that the struggle of one to live with dignity must be the struggle of all. Read. Weep. Rage. And above all else - like those people described in this brilliant book- find the courage to "do,"" - Dr. James Orbinski, recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize on behalf of Me decins Sans Frontie res " AIDS in Africa is an enigma. The more it spreads, the less we see it. It is deadly yet deniable. It hides in full view of everyone. What this moving book does is to catch it by the tail and show us its face - "it is our own,"" - Christopher Hope, author of My Mother' s Lovers " Essential reading in the Age of AIDS, it is never earnest, and, whilst often painful, full of humane and painstakingly researched detail." - Emma Thompson "From the Hardcover edition."This is a formidable book of record . . . from the tiny virus, via 28 individual human stories, to an entire continent. It sounds weird to say it, but I couldn't put this book down. All the stories are so compelling and so well-written. Nolen doesn't tell one story over and over, but tells many stories using very diverse people. Her courage is obvious: she hung out with a long-haul trucker, a sex worker, and people with AIDS who had only days left to live. I was especially intrigued by the stories of the infected ones who became powerful advocates. What this book left me with wasn't the sense that "these people are pathetic victims we richer folk need to help," but that these are resilient, strong, interesting human beings suffering a horrid situation with little or no resources, and we should help them help themselves. As a journalist, I'm in awe of Stephanie Nolen in every respect. As a reader, I'm compelled to respond. I highly recommend the related website, [...], where you can read about each of the 28 briefly, and see a video interview of several. The website and book both give many ideas for how you can help. Start by reading a book that could change your life.

I bought this book after hearing an interview with the author on NPR. Then it rested on a pile of books to read for over a year. It didn't seem like the type of book you want to take to the beach or vacation. Or a book to read and put yourself to sleep at night. Then I started to read it one day after hearing of relief work in Africa from a friend. I read several of the profiles/stories. I kept thinking, ok, she has put the most dramatic ones in the front of the book. They can't be that much different after a few. And I was proven wrong. Every story was unique. They are unique from so many different perspectives. Yet they all have the common theme and sensitivity brought to the reader by a very skilled and aware reporter. Nolen doesn't just drop in on someone and do a quick interview. She wraps many dimensions around each story--human, family, love, economic, political, education and so much more. I encourage interested readers to look at the other reviews. Then buy the book. But don't wait to read it.

I haven't read this book yet, it arrived today, but, I am aware of the epidemic of HIV in Africa, it's not 28, it's over 28 million, I buy hand crafted jewelry made by HIV + women in Africa, it's beautiful , inexpensive and I git it when ever I can.

I have spent somewhat extensive time in both East and West Africa and I feel that this book not only portrays the way AIDs is stigmatized but also how little some groups actually understand AIDs. After reading 28, I have a changed perspective on AIDs around the world both through how I act when I am abroad and how I talk to people in the US about it.

interesting but out of date

Nice montage of stories. Being from South Africa, I was hoping for more local stories--I just read the ones from RSA first and then picked and chose the others.

I read this book in preparation for a mission trip to South Africa to work with Aids orphans. The book did a great job of telling the stories of various victims of Aids without judging or exonerating. My eyes were opened to the magnitude of suffering and gave me a better understanding of the individual and societal problems that we may encounter.

Very eye opening to the struggles women face because of HIV/AIDS

4.5 stars — OK, first thing you should know about me is that I’m a scared crier…meaning tears fall out of my eyes uncontrollably (b/c it’s not normal crying) when I get scared. And this book is NOT scary people. I mean, there are suspenseful bits, sure. But apparently just the concept of ghosts scares the crap out of me. I started this book at 1am while my husband is away on business, and you better believe I freaked myself out. I don’t know why I said first thing, that was more just an aside because it amused me.This book really did suck me in despite scaring me…and I think I was scared because the atmosphere surrounding the school and Johnny was described so well. The way the story was laid out was really interesting as well — there were 2 or 3 glimpses into the past near the beginning to help us understand what happened, but mostly it was set in the present. And we also got quite a few POVs. Now, that’s not always my favourite, but in this case the bits we saw from other people felt right for the plot. However, there were a few times with just Maggie and Johnny where I felt like the POV changed without a clear break (like sometimes maybe even in a paragraph) and that’s a pet peeve of mine. It’s not incorrect at all, I believe this is a case of 3rd person omniscient…but I guess I’m just not as big a fan of that, and it’s not what I’m used to reading so it feels wrong to me even when it isn’t.I loved Maggie, even as she frustrated me. She was so vulnerable and desperate for love that would stay, my heart broke for how hard she worked to not be a bother to Aunt Irene. I totally understood her connection with Johnny, and truly felt their chemistry…I didn’t doubt the love she developed, but I was just as concerned about her lack of awareness of the untenable situation that was their relationship. At times it felt like she did become obsessed. I understood why, I just wanted more for her, you know? I appreciated the little detail about her having dyslexia, and how becoming a foster kid kind of let that fall through the cracks so that no one noticed or helped.Johnny totally got to me too…honestly, I wouldn’t have minded being in his head even more. He was such an interesting character because he was this popular kid when he was alive, but then he had 50+ years of loneliness to shape him into someone…more I guess. I felt for him and what that kind of isolation must have done to him. I understood his connection with Maggie, and I appreciated that he tried to do the right thing, but found that hard to maintain.I adored Gus and Aunt Irene…they were a wonderful pseudo-family for Maggie, and I loved that Maggie automatically had someone who believed her in Gus. Shad was a mixed bag for me…he was written so perfectly, this lonely, awkward, 14 year old boy just trying to survive high school. I would get annoyed with his crush on Maggie, but it was so perfectly realistic for a kid his age. He was hilarious and annoying and my heart ached for what he was going through.I’m super interested to see what happens next. I wouldn’t call that a cliffhanger ending, but I was also glad I could just buy the next book and get answers right away. There were so many little tidbits of plot that felt like hints, and I can’t wait to see how everything unfolds.

I've put this book off for so long. I figured it's Halloween. Why not pick up a ghost story? My biggest fear with paranormal romance is that it would either be incredibly unbelievable or incredibly cheesy. Rest assured and true to Amy's nature, this is neither.Maggie uncovers her school's tragic history and Johnny Kilcross. Their friendship builds so slowly and beautifully and eventually leads to such a sweet, old-fashioned love.I have fallen in love with these characters and all the old-fashioned charm that is in this book. Amy takes us back to a time when gentleman still courted their girls and would steal a chaste kiss.Amy sets us right up for Prom Night in Purgatory. I can only anticipate part two being just as beautifully written.

3.5 Stars... A story about getting a second chance at love with a supernatural twist... Overall I enjoyed this ghostly tale with the throw back to the 50's; it was a sweet and romantic read with likable characters and an interesting storyline... I think my struggle simply came that it didn't hold the depth that I am accustomed to with an Amy Harmon book... The simplicity of the read was disappointing; I wanted the characters to have more complexity and the love to be a deeper struggle with more conflict... It seemed like the main characters went from wariness to a bone deep love instantly; I wanted to watch that progression and feel their emotional journey as they found their connection to one another... There were some twists and turns along the way and the story alludes to a mystery to be revealed which piques my interests, so I will certainly read the second book and see how it all unfolds:)

Who is the boy no one else can see?And what do you do when you fall in love with a ghost?A beautiful, poetic and haunting love story. So much anguish and heartache but throughout the story you will have hope - hope for a different outcome and hope for a happy or even a good ending. The author truly knows how to capture your soul, your mind and your emotions.Full of ghosts, old memories, loneliness, mystery, eternity and love.Perfect for readers of paranormal romances.

The characters in this book are great. There is such depth to Maggie and Shad along with Gus and aunt Irene. I'm really loving everything I read by Amy Harmon. The story flows nicely and keeps you wondering how things could ever work for these beautiful people but doesn't make any ending seem impossible. I feel like I know what the school actually looks like and have walked the halls myself. Like I've known a girl like Mags and can see her clearly. I'm ready to move along to Book 2 and see where this story goes and thankful that I don't have to wait. ♡

After having read all of Amy Harmon's books, I knew that rather sooner than later, I'd be reading this one and the sequel as well. Now that I finished them, I want to slap myself a dozen times over as why I didn't read these already ages ago!Beautiful, heartwarming story with very lovable characters. Once I started reading, I couldn't put it down. Captivating and gripping story. I barely read any paranormal books but I know that if they were all written in the way Amy Harmon writes them, I'd read them all.All of the characters touched my heart, each in their own way. I must confess I was a bit confused with their names in the beginning but the further I got in the story, it became more clear as of who was who and when/where they were.If you're a fan of Amy Harmon's writing, and you haven't read this (and the sequel) yet, don't wait any longer! Get on it, asap!

this was a gift for my son. He loves the book and finds it very interesting.

So excited to start the book!!! So good!

The concepts are interesting, but they are barely touched on. The hardest part to get through is that it reads like a bunch of high school essays being submitted for an assignment. Things are touched on but never mentioned again, and then the chapters are each over before you really have a grasp on the topic. But mostly the writing is just elementary.

I love the Song of Ice and Fire series and I love psychology, so this book was a win for me. It teaches basic psychology points and then uses Game of Throne references to back them up and explain them.I do not believe it is as strong as his other books though, as Travis does not seem to be as knowledgeable about Song of Ice and Fire as he is his other books.

Love Game of Thrones. Love Psychology!Soft cover book.

I'm enjoying the book, so far. I think that if the authors waited, some, they'd have more to work with. Viserys and his influence on Daenerys - even the mad king's influence! Cercei inheriting alcoholism from her husband. I'm hoping to find something about Jorah Mormont's devotion to Daeny - unrequited love.

Loved it

Thanks

If you are interested in memory improvement, this book is foundational and possibly the only memory book you will need. Harry lays the basics for mnemonics, pegs, and other basic aspects of memorization techniques. Reread value is incredibly high, as this book is intended for memory mastery. It has a conversational aspect which makes it easy to read.

Great quick overview of memory techniques content- The book provides a great quick overview of memory techniques and how to apply them. It's not a technical book on how to win a memory competition, but rather a useful guide for using them in day-to-day experience to improve your learning.

The book is very easy to read and has a lot of examples. I have tested them and proved that the methods do work. I’m also teaching my daughters to practice some of the techniques that can be used by students, using it to learn facts easier and keep them in the long-term memory. This works for oral reports and presentations. 100% recommended...this book is money well spent.

They way he breaks down the mind of athletes really intrigues me. And to be able to transfer those though processes over to mine has been a great learning curve. This book is strongly recommended.

I think this book really can have a tremendously positive effect on life, if one is disciplined enough to learn and practice its methods. I am sure it will be useful for me, because these methods. The merit of this book is that compiles them neatly, explains them very well and always maintaining a high motivation.

After studying over numerous and uncountable self-improvement books (include applying many of the ideas to my life), 50 Memory Improvement and Brain Training Techniques is one of my absolute favourites. What I loved most about it, is the concise, practical way laying out the techniques we can use to make learning more FUN, and make it stick in our minds. It compares well to a lot of other, more academic books on learning which are out there. 50 Memory Improvement is a book I recommend to you if you want to make memorising more fun, remember information, and gain a great advantage in a time where learning and growth is more important than ever.

The book was very easy to follow and the information digestible. I found a lot of it to be the same information I’ve heard elsewhere, but practices make everything stick better. I’m very grateful to the 5 star reviewers out there who gave me the confidence to purchase this book- it is most definitely money well spent.

If you want just ONE guide for memory techniques to cover all your bases, this is a great one. It goes enough into depth into each technique to use and understand them all, but if you want to REALLY go into these techniques, this is a good place to start, and then continue onto more thorough books. This is a general guide that presents many techniques and gives an overview of them, and for someone just starting out with memory techniques, this is a great read!
