About the Author

Craig Luebben was an AMGA Rock Guide Instructor and served on the Board of Directors for six years. He was the author or co-author of nine books on climbing and wrote numerous gear reviews and travel articles for Climbing and Rock & Ice magazines. He had a BS in Mechanical Engineering from Colorado State University and had done graduate work in rocket science. An off-width aficionado, Craig invented the expandable tube chock known as a Big Bro (see page TK), which is still sold by Trango. On August 9th, 2009, at the age of 49, Craig was killed while leading a pitch on Mount Torment in North Cascades National Park when a car-sized block of ice broke off sending him on a 30-foot fall. Craig is survived by his wife Silvia and his daughter, who was 6 at the time―both of whom he loved deeply. Clyde Soles is a freelance writer and photographer with four decades of climbing experience. He is former Senior Editor of Rock & Ice magazine and the founder of Trail Runner magazine. Clyde has authored or co-authored nine outdoor how-to books, including two other knots books.

Poor illustrations, poor directions, disappointing - I would not recommend this book for knots if you are a beginner. The Falcon press book on rappelling has much better instructions and illustrations.

A couple of typo errors, a couple of inconsistencies between text and photos, and a couple of suggestions made in the text that had no supporting photos, a couple of photos that should have been embedded in vertical format for easier understanding, a couple of unnecessary knots. I liked the color photos very well done kudos to Falcon Guide for going color the photos are easier to see now. Maybe a key to distinguish essential knots for trad / rappel / sport ...

I do not trust some knots presented by the book, but in general it shows what is needed.

Easy to use guide with good explanation of what type of situations knots apply to.

Some of the knots are not that well detailed and pictured. There are some steps that aren't described well and you have to figure them out on your own. If you were a Boy Scout and learned most of these knots in the past, this book will do a great job of refreshing your memory. But if you have no experience tying knots, this book can be frustrating. The problem is that in climbing a bad knot can be fatal so make sure you're tying them correctly before setting off.

Would like to have seen a few more ways to use oils and not so much history of aromatherapy. Looking for more of a reference on what oils to use for dogs and strength to use.

This is an excellent resource for beginners. It covers all important aspects of starting/learning to use EO with animals SAFELY. I especially like the thorough teachings about the importance of buying/using high quality ingredients. It has basic "recipes" for use with animals. Instructions are easy/thorough. I think too many pages were devoted to other professional's experiences.(But that is useful for ppl who are skeptical about EO.). It does not have an index and too many pages of sources to buy from (eventually those sources become outdated). That's the main reason I gave it 4 out of 5 *. Because of the "filler" pages of resources that could be found online searching anyway.

This book fell very short of what I had bought it for. I was looking for information on birds, most of the information in this book is for dogs. I will do further research on what I am looking for.

I am relatively new to essential oils especially with respect to pets. A friend had given me one page from this book as to what not to use! I located the book on amazon ordered it and have already referred this book to others. this book has helped me help my elderly Great Dane who has arthritis etc. The language is clear and the rationale provided for what to use and how to use I find very helpful. Additional reference material is also a plue. I keep this book handy with my other people and pet remedy information. I would read more from this author!

A wonderful book that contains pretty much all you need to know to work with essential oils and applications/uses on animals. (You could also use some of the recipes for humans too!) Well written and researched. Easy to read and put knowledge into application. I highly recommend this for student of Aromatherapy.

Great Book. Don't star negotiating without this book!

This has to be one of the most irritating books that I have ever read. The author spends an excrutiating amount of time going over trivial details. This book could be half of it's legnth if he didn't use this poor writing style.The material itself is very scant, and there are many better negotiating books available. If this is your first Negotiation book then it may be useful, however if you are a professional in the field or intend on gaining some new insights from this book you will be greatly disapointed. This problem is made worse by the fact that, the author constantly promises to introduce new tactics 'later' in the book - many of which he only spends a line or two on.In short, the author promises a great deal on the back cover and introduction, but fails to deliver on most of them. After reading this book, I felt like I wasted the last few hours. Now who do I negotiate with to get that time of my life back?

If you have participated in negotiations before, you'll know how to decide what sections of the plentiful advice here apply to your needs. From the most basic and self-evident advice (get it in writing) to the psychological (stay friendly) to the more sophisticated (be aware of your opponent's culture), author Peter Wink tries to cover a variety of negotiating situations and tactics. His suggestions vary from hardball (turn up the heat and use uncomfortable chairs), which may be difficult to implement, to puffball (walk away smiling), depending on what your opponent throws at you. And if he sounds a little paranoid when describing negotiations that went wrong, take his experiences as a cautionary warning. If you need to do a better job of getting what you want, we recommend this useful guide. Much of its advice will be helpful and applicable - just think like a negotiator and chose wisely.

I was very impressed by the way of writing and the contents of the book. I liked how Peter first starts with developing the right negotiating mindset. I personally believe that this is very important. I must tell you that I have never considered negotiating in a shop for example as something decent. Nowit is a different ball game for me. I can't not think of a way to reduce the price in a shop I go. I totally changed. I am inspired and burn from desire for my next big purchase to do. The book is full and very complete I think. All the tactics are extremely useful and it even surprised me at the endwhere Peter includes things like Employee and Retail discounts.Reading the examples on the different tactics I wished there were counteract on the counteract of using the strategies. I don't know if this is possible, but would have been very useful for me.I must say it is a great book and I have already recommended it to some of my fellow investors in our property investment club. We give specific attention to negotiations and I thing this book is one of the 'must reads'.This book forms an important part in my wealth library.Thank you Peter.

I don't usually recommend books but I think this book is awesome. I have put some of Peter's negotiating techniques in action and they work. I found the book not only informative but also interesting and doable. The execises were very helpful and certainly help to create the negotiating mindset that Peter talks about.Make sure and read each chapter over until Peter's teachings are fully understood and make sure and do the exercises.I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to win in the negotiating process. Can't wait to read his next book.

I think Peter teaches people how to use negotiating techniques in a format that everyone can understand and put to use in everyday life. He covers every area.Additionally I especially like how he tells you what to avoid in both personal and business deals.I highly recommend this book and have read it several times. When you purchase it read it a few times and be sure to complete the exercises in the book as they are very helpful.

Overall this is a great book, a great addition to anyone's architecture/planning library and also is also great for people who just getting into the field of planning.The problem, however is the fact is that it is basically a repetition of everything what has already been said in another timeless book by Jan Gehl "Life Between Buildings". I am very fond of all the work produced by Jan Gehl, and in the end I do not regret buying this book, but it is disappointing to see how little afford was actually put into it. Even some of the pictures are directly taken from his other books. In the end, I want to give it a 5 star review, because it is nevertheless a great book, especially for anybody who is not familiar with other books by Jan Gehl, but I have to give a 3 star review, because it is really a sort new edition of Life Between Buildings. At the same time Life Between Buildings provides a far more detailed analysis about public spaces and its social dimension and is just way more engaging, and I would recommend buying it before Cities for People.

I received the book fresh off the press, and the book was filled with fresh ideas about how we design our cities.Gehl has been in the field of architecture and urban design for a long time now. Through "Cities for People" Gehl shares his knowledge and wisdom that he has acquired through out the years. As a student intending to be an architecture, reading this book completely changed what I thought being an architecture was about.Who should read this book?City Politicians - Read this book and better understand your citizens.Architectures and Urban Planners - Obviously people in the design field should read it. I believe every student would greatly benefit, I know I did.Citizens! - Yes, I believe citizens should read this book. For those that live in cities improve your voice in city policy by having an understand of how cities work at the human level, your level. For those that don't live in the city, it will make a well design city a place you desire to live.Key Concepts-The most prominent concept in the book is viewing the city through the human perspective. In the past several decades, since the automobile has dominated city life, architecture and urban spaces have been created for the fast pace of the automobile. Buildings are bigger, with less details. Urban spaces are far too large to be enjoyable. Gehl argues that urban planners and architects must begin to view design from a bottom up perspective, from instead of a top down perspective.-Pictures-- Reading Gehl's book was an experience. I did not read the book from front to back. I continually flipped ahead to look at the wonderful pictures, to return back and re read a paragraph I just read. Without the pictures in the book, "Cities for People" would be a dull experience. However, there are many pictures used to emphasize certain points. Gehl could have thrown tons of numbers at you(which he does have plenty of statistical data), instead he shows you the difference between a car friendly street and a pedestrian friendly street. He shows how a long street with no windows or lights scares people away, compared to a street with open shops and outdoor cafes have an exuberant human interaction.-Walking, Bicycling ,Staying and Meeting -- Most of the book focuses on getting more people walking and bicycling as means of transportation. Walking and Cycling can also lead to staying in urban spaces and meeting people.Table of Contents (Chapter Titles)1. The Human Dimension2. Senses and Scale3. The lively, safe, sustainable, and healthy city4. The city at eye level5. Life, space, buildings -- in that order6. Developing citiesThe only criticism I have with the book is that Gehl focuses entirely on out door space. Most of what he tells us should apply to indoors, but it would be nice if Gehl took his ideas into the buildings not just outside.A Great Architect and another great book. Worth every page turn.

Christoph is mortified, angry, and embarrassed as he asks his uncle..."I beg you to tell my mother to send Mr Beethoven away." But as the months and then years go by, Christoph's letters begin to change. He develops compassion and tolerance for this eccentric musical genius who lives upstairs, that slowly turns into respect, admiration, and true friendship..... Beethoven Lives Upstairs is easy to read and hard to forget, and is a positive tale almost anyone should find likable.

OK, I don't own this book, but I my daughter loves the CD of the story. I'm sure the pictures are lovely, but the real magic of Beethoven is his music. Words cannot describe how magical the ending is with the climax of the 9th Symphony. PLEASE get the CD version too, they did an amazing job of allowing the music to tell and enhance the story.

Teresa "Tere" Adams is a shy girl. People even go so far as to think she's deaf or has a learning disability. No, she's just shy. She doesn't want her secret radio identity revealed to the whole world!I've come across characters who are the underdog and unpopular, but not so painfully shy. Tere is also unique because she seems so unlike herself when she's DJ'ing, the microphone and anonymity acting as masks between her and her classmates. This novel was delightful. I was rooting for Tere from beginning to end.

My Thoughts: We begin the story with Teresa Adams being a really shy girl. I could relate to her on so many levels. She just wanted to do what she could to stay away from being embarrased. The mean girl picked on her. She just wanted to go to school, not get noticed very much, and do what she was supposed too. Even her mom was on her case a lot. Her stepfather owns the radio station and she goes on the radio and starts to do a few segmants. She is truly herself on the radio. Nobody there to hold her back. Nobody there to make her feel shy. The main DJ sets up a contest for the winner of a music demo to win a date to prom with her. But of course she likes someone else, Gavin. She would much rather go to prom with him. Too bad he's already got plans with his brother that night. She may just be on her own for prom, hopefully she don't get stuck with a horrible "prom date."I'm surprised this is Danielle Joseph's first novel. You could tell she is a very comfortable writer and she truly writes from the heart. I really enjoyed reading this book and I could definitely feel myself in the writing. I could relate to Tere. I could even relate to her crush on Gavin.Overall: Wonderful story. Loved it! I, myself, as a teen listened to the radio all hours of night so I could totally see where Tere was coming from. If you have this book sitting in your TBR pile, don't wait any longer, go pick it up NOW and read it!

'Shrinking Violet' is a book that many people could probably relate to. The main character, Tere (short for Teresa), is very quiet and shy, and doesn't feel comfortable communicating with others. Because of her fear of opening up to others, she only has one friend, her best friend -- but still someone she could never tell her deepest, most secret thoughts to. Even her mother is difficult to communicate with, as she is very outgoing and comes off as shallow and self-centered -- she keeps pushing Tere to not only be more social, but to wear make-up and lose weight so that she can get boys more interested in her, as she herself had always dated TONS of guys.Tere's one true passion is listening to music. She listens to her iPod all the time, prancing around her room pretending to be a radio DJ -- her dream job, which she fears she isn't good enough for. However, when she gets into an argument with her mother in front of her new step-dad and yells out how she wants to be a DJ, she gets a surprise when her stepfather immediately offers to let her help out at SLAM, the popular radio station that he owns.Throughout the book, we get to see the many struggles that Tere has with voicing herself to others, shown in the various scenarios that she is faced with: a group presentation she has to do for her English class, a cute boy who shares her taste in music & is in her group, a popular girl who enjoys picking on her, and an overbearing mother who seems to do nothing but point out her flaws. We also get to see how she overcomes her difficulties with communication, and how her relationship with those around her changes.I liked how Tere's character developed, and how very down-to-earth she was. I also felt that I, myself, could relate to her struggles A LOT. The story was well written, but I give it 4 stars rather than 5 because it was not only too predictable, but somewhat lacking. I think that the author could have done much more with the novel, and perhaps fleshed-out some of the other characters a bit more, but I still really enjoyed it and would recommend it to anyone struggling to fit in with the world around them.

Danielle Joseph created an awesome story - that might seem to many somewhat simple, common, not so interesting - however, to me, this is the BEST novel I have ever read !Tere's inner transformation & immerging is awesome !I cannot imagine any sane teen or even adult that would not want to be friends with her !Who wouldn't want to have that kind of self-confidence or be around people who have ?! ...I also like the Disney movie Radio Rebel inspired by this novel.Definitely 5 star reading !

I could really relate to this book. I wasn't quite as shy as Tere was in this novel, but I certainly hated public speaking of any kind and would shake all the way through any speeches I had to present to a class of peers.This novel was amazing, with realistic characters and a plot that could appeal to music lovers, shy girls and boys, or anyone in need of a decent realistic fiction novel. Danielle really sucks you into her story line and even though you know it is really quite possibly that it will be the happily ever after ending, you keep biting your fingers along the way. You really must read this book!
