As mentioned in another review, this book should be supplemental with another "getting started" guide if you are new to Golang. If you are simply considering Golang and understand the concepts of web applications then this will be a quick read. This book is very well written and well organized. It is a tutorial, not a reference. However, it is a good tutorial. If you dislike searching the web and trying to find small tutorials on one topic at a time (which are rarely well written), then this is the book for you. It will get you started on many important concepts, and the "why" is explained along the way.

Excellent text. Densely filled with easy to understand and apply golang web tools. The chapters are clearly divided after the second chapter into easy to digest topics which can easily stand on their own if you need a brush up on things such as database interfacing or a primer on accepting form data.Very very well done and i will eagerly scoop up future texts from Sau on golang.

I love Go (gloang) and this is an extremely helpful book that should be part of every Go programmer's bookshelf.Well written and great examples.

a very good book for those who want to take it from the beginning to the end

Sau Sheong Chang's book is nicely written and rich with code examples. He meets his goals of showing how to do web programming using only the Go language and "nothing more than standard libraries." However, you definitely should have some Go programming experience, some familiarity with Go syntax, and some experience with web development before diving into this text. Things are NOT spelled out with numbered how-to steps. If you are just getting started with Go, try "Go in Action" or another introductory Go programming book before tackling this work. The same applies if you have little or no web development experience. Get some first. Unlike some Manning books, you start coding in Chapter 1 in "Go Web Programming," and you are thrown into the deep end of the swimming pool in Chapter 2. The author wisely cautions: "If you find this chapter a bit too intimidating--especially with the rush of Go code--don't be too alarmed. Work through the next few chapters and then revisit this one and you'll find that things become a lot clearer!" In Chapter 2, you build a simple Internet forum app called ChitChat, and data is stored in a PostgreSQL relational database. The remaining eight chapters dig deeper into the web development process using Go, including testing and deploying to standalone servers, to services such as Heroku and Google App Engine, and to Docker containers. A lot of work clearly has gone into preparing this book. But again, be sure you have some Go experience and some web development experience before tackling "Go Web Programming." (My thanks to Manning for making a review copy available.)

The title matches the content exactly. The content begins by asking and answering the question, "What is web development?" After that solid introduction, the book then answers the question again in the Go language so that by the end, the reader can answer the questions, "What is web development?" and "How does one develop a web application in Go (without 3rd party libraries)?"The book is very well written and accessible for readers like myself who are new to the subject. I don't have a programming background and had to first learn the basics of Go, but that was enough for me to grasp the many code examples. Whether you are new to Go or web development or both, this book is a bargain for the value.The book is thorough and consumed so much of my attention that my wife is reconsidering our marriage vows.

Very well written book and examples are also very relevant. Being a tech editor I could see that this book is well reviewed and there aren't any bugs in the code.

I bought this book specifically for the recipes; simple, everyday food made with fresh ingredients. Despite the many negative reviews about the book from ePC owners (and ATK's bias) to the contrary, I bought it specifically for an electric PC (Instant Pot) and have found this to be an excellent cookbook. To be sure, the timing given is for stovetop PCs, but with the proper timing adjustments, the recipes turn out very well.I'd like to say a few things about ATK's dislike of ePCs (a big part of why the best of them are "Recommended With Reservations"). In the full review of them found in the magazine and on the website, they go into great detail. It mostly comes down to 2 things. First, it seems that all ePCs (including my Instant Pot) automatically switch over to "Keep Warm" when cooking is completed. This seems to completely befuddle them. But really, is turning your electric unit off when the timer sounds any different than turning your stove off when your own timer goes off at the end of stovetop cooker's pressure time? I think it's exactly the same, as both require getting up and turning off the pot when the beep sounds (Note - the Instant Pot 7-in-1 switches to 'keep warm', but the heating element is turned OFF until pressure releases, then turns back on in warming mode). 2nd, they dislike the nonstick cooking pots. Fair enough, but their last review didn't include any of the models that ship with stainless pots (very nice ones, too, with thick bases, like the one on my IP) and completely ignores the optional stainless pot available for some of the others. And yes, those models (Instant Pot among them) were available well before their latest ePC review was written. Ok, rant over, back to the book.The beginning of the book covers the basics of operation and advantages (along with reviews) of pressure cookers. Especially helpful are the tips and food guides found on pages 4-23. As a relatively new PC owner, I find myself referring to them often, even when cooking from another source. Experienced PC cooks will just skip right past them, but they're very nice for beginners and anyone, really, who's cooking something new.The chapters are well organized and include nice entries like Fast and Easy Suppers as well as Fancy Dinners and Large Roasts. I appreciate that anything that's not normally a main dish is all in one chapter, Sides. Desserts are a notable omission, but they redeem themselves with One-Pot Pasta and Pasta Sauces and Indoor Barbecue. The recipes predictably make use of fresh ingredients and ATK's signature streamlined methods, like finely chopping the vegetables for Bolognese sauce in a food processor, then doing the same with the pancetta and mortadella. This not only speeds up prep time, it allows the ingredients to cook down faster while still releasing all their flavor compounds to the sauce. Total time? 90 minutes. Not shabby. The sole exception to the "fresh" rule seems to the condensed French onion soup used in Weeknight Pot Roast and Potatoes. It works, though, and got my pot roast on the table in 70 minutes, start to finish (note - I prefer to use Lipton Onion Soup and a cup of water, we like the flavor better). ATK helpfully gives total time involved, and highlights time under pressure in big type, a nice touch. Some nice detailed variations are included in many of the recipes, like Garden Tomato Sauce with variations for Puttanesca, Arrabbiata and Tomato, Vodka & Cream Sauce.In the 3 weeks I've owned the book, I've sampled recipes from 3 chapters; the aforementioned Weeknight Pot Roast and Potatoes from Big Roasts and Fancy Meals, Pulled Pork from Indoor Barbecue and Barbecued Beans from Sides. All were very good. To the pork I added about 1/4 cup of my barbecue sauce (tossed after shredding) and to the Barbecued Beans I added about 2 Tbls more catsup to amp up the tomato flavor a notch. Both were the kind of easy fixes that I commonly make with new recipes, slight alterations to suit our tastes.The book has lots of white space on the pages, which makes it so easy to jot down alterations, and also allows me to easily note the timing for my Instant Pot, which often varies from the listed time. Pages are glossy white, with ingredient lists and major steps in bold type. Why doesn't every cookbook do this? Also included with every recipe is a detailed explanation (with thumbnail photos) of the techniques used and a few troubleshooting tips. Again, experienced PC cooks may find this unnecessary, but with the new resurgence in pressure cooking, many of us will find these quite valuable.It's not a big book, with only 100 recipes, but when I compare it to The Great Big Pressure Cooker Book, it shines. That book has 500 recipes, every one of which lists ingredients in brick-red ink, which all runs together on it's busy pages. Further, the index is very poorly organized, with some recipes appearing under their main and secondary ingredient and on their own, by title, and others only found once under their main ingredient. Most damning of all, the timing for electric cookers given with every recipe I sampled is woefully off. Risotto takes 6 minutes in my Instant Pot, GBPCB's author thinks it takes 10. ATK lists it at 6 minutes, spot on. Note that for short-cooking foods, ePC timing is the same as for stovetop models.Of the 3 pressure cookbooks I own, this is my favorite. It is well organized, easy to read and cook from and the recipes use simple, commonly available, fresh ingredients.

If you're using an electric pressure cooker, you should probably steer clear of this cookbook. For instance, several recipes call for adding flour prior to pressure cooking. If you add flour prior to cooking under pressure with an electric pressure cooker, you will probably never get to pressure as the flour will settle on the bottom of the pot, burn, and keep the liquid from boiling properly and thus coming to pressure.Additionally, the suggestions for altering recipes for electric pressure cookers are generally off. As an example, why set a separate timer rather than using the cooker's timer? The timer on my electric cooker starts as soon as the pot comes to pressure so there's no need to start a separate cooker at that time as the book suggests.For context, I've been cooking with modern pressure cookers for nearly twenty years. I've done so with two stovetop cookers--Kuhn Rikon and Fissler--and now recently with an Instant Pot, an electric model. Also, I've subscribed to Cook's Illustrated since the 1990s and I'm generally a fan of their work--including America's Test Kitchen. Nonetheless, this cookbook is a failure. There are many better pressure cooker books out there. See, for example, Hip Pressure Cooking and those by Lorna Sass.Edit: After I wrote the above, I wondered if I'd missed something about this book as Cook's Illustrated and America's Test Kitchen have been such great resources for me. To my surprise, I found that I'd missed how truly flawed the book is!Via a web search that included the book's title and then added the word errors, I read multiple reviews that clearly and precisely layed out the major flaws--timings too long and too short, too much water when cooking beans, the thickener error I noted above, and the list goes on.Bottom line, all pressure cooker owners--whether stovetop or electric--should avoid this book. It simply fails on too many levels.

I would give this book zero stars were it possible for a few reasons.1) You can find FREE online resources that go into greater detail. As if this isn't bad enough, the author actually includes links to some of those resources. So basically, what you're paying for is nothing but the simplest of introductions to the patterns mentioned in this book and a reference where to learn more..2) Going by the content of this book, I judge the author doesn't have a strong grasp how to implement these patterns in actual programs and his experience with and knowledge of them doesn't go beyond the theory behind them.3) This book is so thin on addressing real-world programming scenarios that I'm hesitant to categorize the book even as low as Patterns 101.Yes, it's that bad.Quite possibly the most useless technical book I've come across in my 10+ years of engineering software. Now, were this a self-published book, perhaps I wouldn't be taken so aback, but it's published by Apress, a publisher I heretofore respected.No more.

I was never much for fantasy, growing up. But I have always had a fondness for stories that depict relatable, contemporary-feeling characters in unusual circumstances. "Pawn of Prophecy," and the entire Belgariad series, had that feel for me. Even though the setting is distinctly fantasy and otherworldly, the characters feel contemporary and alive to me.This book also has the ability to make me feel nostalgic, despite its setting. Garion, the protagonist, starts as a young boy, and his relationship with his Aunt Pol is essentially the relationship most young boys have with the women who raise them—whether that be mothers or grandmothers or aunts. I re-read this book every now and then just to revisit that warm and golden part of my own boyhood, and all the adventure that seemed to lurk around my home and my neighborhood growing up. Not to mention all the trouble I managed to get into.This book is the first in a 5-part series—though you could actually call it a 10-part series, since the Belgariad's sequel series the Mallorean ties in so smoothly. I recommend it to anyone who loves a good story with a dramatic hero's journey. You will not be disappointed. This is Lord of the Rings for people who want more direct language and a more pure character arc.

I'm so happy Amazon finally has this available on kindle! I first read this series about 30 years ago. It's one of those rare stories you take out and read at least once a year. A truly unique story, with incredibly detailed world and history building. I love all of the main characters. Yes...every single one. This is a classic that is just as enjoyable today as it was 30 years ago. Eddings had a delightful writing style. The book is laugh out loud funny in parts, grand and majestic in others. The dialog is always fast, the story really has no weak points to critique. I can't recommend it enough. Now Amazon...please release the Mallorean, Belgarath the Sorcerer and Polgara the Sorceress by this author on kindle and you will have a very, very happy customer.

I first encountered The Belgariad during my senior year of high school. Without giving away my age in specifics, let me just say that was a very long time ago. I was hooked a few chapters into the first book, and I happily remain so today. Typically, I read through the entire Belgariad and Mallorean series every few years. To each his or her own of course, but personally I adore Eddings' writing style, and his ability to create believable, multi-dimensional characters is beyond outstanding. I heartily give a full five stars to these magnificent books.Unfortunately, I need to revoke a few of those stars for the Kindle version. I'm not sure who's in charge of editing and proofreading these things, but for heaven's sake someone has to do a better job. I encountered numerous typos in both Pawn of Prophecy and Queen of Sorcery. To be fair, I haven't yet got into Magician's Gambit so I cannot speak for that book. One particularly glaring example is the mistaken use of the word "throe" in place of what most likely should have been "thy." The problem is, it doesn't just show up once; it happens numerous times in both Pawn and Queen. Obviously someone majorly messed up a "find and replace" function during the editing process. Another error that happens more than once (although not nearly as much as the "throe" debacle) is the number 1 being tacked onto the character Durnik's name. So what should be "Durnik" is instead "Durnik1". Okay, maybe it's just me but I actually laughed at that one because I couldn't help but imagine Durnik having a Yahoo screen name or some such.In the end, the typos aren't nearly enough to ruin the experience of being able to bring these books along with you in one convenient, easy to read format. But it definitely is something I hope the publisher takes care of soon.Lastly, I certainly hope the final two books of the series are eventually added to Kindle. It would really be annoying to have to switch out to my old paperbacks after being able to take the first of these old classics in on my shiny new Paperwhite.

I cannot tell you how many times I have read this book. Eddings can flesh out a character like many cannot. I love that Aunt Pol has such a strong place in these books. Like Garion what would you do if everything you thought was true with your life turned out to be mostly wrong? A beginning of a grand adventure..

I read this book when it was first published in 1982. The Belgariad and The Mallorean are my favorite fantasy series of all time. I usually read through them once a year. It never gets old. The characters are so well developed that you feel like you know them personally. There are many laugh out loud moments in these books. I absolutely love the world David and Leigh Eddings created in these books!

I have read this series every few years since it was published. I consider it the very best medieval romance series ever created. I also regularly buy the first book in the series and give it away to friends to spark their interest. I have not the words to relate how epic the Belgariad and subsequent Mallorean series of books is. Mr. and Mrs Eddings represent the finest fantasy authors I have had the pleasure of reading.

My husband listens to this ALL the time. Car rides, regular commute, he even listens to it before bed. He has read it almost as many times as he's listened to it. I like to listen to it with him on car rides though I prefer less wordiness in my novels when reading for fun. Great characters though. They are unique and loveable and real feeling. Great depth and breadth. Intriguing story line and may one day be considered a classic story and example of high fiction.

Read this book for the first time in the early 80s, when it first came out. Since then I read it every few years. Enjoy the characters and the story. Still have the original paperback for the the 80s, but picked up the kindle version so I can read it again easier. Highly recommend this series.
